Overall, the documentary's strengths lie in its photography, art direction, sound mixing and editing. Other than that, there's not much substance. Go to Full Review

The film can be seen as simply a kind of impressionistic travelogue, but it slowly and irresistibly conveys that we're also seeing a rite of passage. Go to Full Review

"Tchoupitoulas" is a jewel-bright whoosh of a ride through nighttime New Orleans. Go to Full Review

Pieced together in ever-transitioning aural layers that mix performances, street ambiance and the spoken dreams of the youngest of the boys, Tchoupitoulas becomes a hallucinatory adventure that revels in the unspoiled experiences of youth. Go to Full Review

A lovely, lyrical film that wondrously captures a very specific time and place -- that is, New Orleans at night, as seen through the eyes of a child. Go to Full Review

At 80 minutes, the film feels a bit long. That's probably an example of the filmmakers' affection for their subjects, both the Zanders brothers and New Orleans. Go to Full Review

Nik F @nikfort Feb 8 It really does capture the sounds and feel of nighttime in the French Quarter. If only there were smell-o-vision to capture the aromas (good and not so good) of the neighborhood. The youngest boy, William, is absolutely charming. The glimpses into the bars and burlesque shows were fun. It does capture the way music permeates every corner of New Orleans — especially the amazing street musicians. There really wasn’t a plot to it — just the impressions the boys had as they wandered the French Quarter for an entire night after missing the last ferry home. Slowly paced and almost poetic visually, it is an interesting experimental film that really defies any genre. See more 05/12/2013 Having lived in New Orleans for two years added to my appreciation of this special documentary about three brothers. Viewers with little New Orleans background will lose many of the local references. This film tips its hat to the classic "Stand By Me," switching venues from Oregon to New Orleans. Instead of four friends who embark on an adventure, three brothers and their dog Buttercup cross the ferry from Algiers to the Crescent City and explore the bitter and the sweet of New Orleans by night. The fact that these are untrained actors makes the film with a loose plot all the more amazing. While not for everyone, this film's unusual aspects makes it particularly memorable See more 04/15/2013 Seen at Hot Docs 2012 See more 03/15/2013 A frequently wonderful mess. Three Algiers brothers cross over to NOLA and miss the ferry back in a one-of-a-kind all-night adventure. See more Read all reviews
