Nick Z Mario Lanza's debut movie, That Midnight Kiss is a delightful programmer that showcases an, as yet, untethered Lanza at his very best as the male ingenue, toggling his affections between a lithesome Kathryn Grayson and a little long in the tooth Marjorie Reynolds. The songs are delightful, and the finale spectacular. But the plot reeks of MGM's late 40's ennui, as L.B. Mayer was spending more time living his private life courting wife #2 and playing the ponies, and allowing the studio to pretty much run on the steam built up from a decade's worth of more solid work before and during WWII. It's not a bad movie. Just an undistinguished one. Had Lanza come to Metro just a few years before, he would have become the sweetheart of their operetta cycle. Here, he's already on the way out even if he doesn't already know it. There's only two other Lanza movies worth seeing, The Great Caruso, and, The Toast of New Orleans. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 10/12/25 Full Review Audience Member Mario Lanza made his film debut in this glossy MGM film which is short on plot but long on a mashup of operatic and pop tunes. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Audience Member ok not my thing though dont really care for lanza Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member Though I'm not a big fan of tenor singers, it was a good solid story nonetheless =) Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/22/23 Full Review Audience Member Barrymore, Munshin, Wynn, and Lanza all have there good points here. But WHY does the nice uncouth opera singer always fall for the stuck up Prima Dona? Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/14/23 Full Review Audience Member Mario Lanza's starring film debut. He & Kathryn Grayson are very well paired. Sweet if predictable story, great singing, very colorful. Jules Munshin and Keenan Wynn are both featured in nice supporting (and funny) roles.
