Andrew Heskins easternKicks.com An impressive Shaw Brothers production of a dark and grisly tale of revenge with a real Spaghetti Western flavour... Rated: 5/5 Sep 24, 2020 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member I'm not familiar with director Feng Yueh, but he'd been making movies since the 1930s all the way through the 1970s, and I quite liked the gritty and stylish approach he took in the Shaw Brothers revenge story. The plot is pretty routine. A young man's family is killed by bandidts and his sister kidnapped, so he hones his martial arts in order to rescue his sister and exact his revenge. I think what makes this film somewhat unique is that it forgoes the usual elegant fighting you got in most marital arts films of this era and have more of a down and dirty style of action. There's a lot of shaky cam work and more medium shots during fight scenes than you usually get, which had the impact of making the fights seem more intimate and personal. Despite being unfamiliar with any of the cast or crew, I found this a very good martial arts action film. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Ok, I get it. I get the bells thing. It was a bracelet his mother was wearing when she and others in his family were killed, and he wears it around his neck to remember them as he seeks revenge. And maybe to intimidate others with the sound. But now everyone knows where he is and can hear him coming. Stealth is never an option. Many of us are just conditioned to think they're loud spurs, but some silence could have helped the guy. Anyway, great movie, had this on my shelf forever and finally watched it. Some really memorable face-off moments where everything else gets suddenly quiet, and I love those. Some really great camera work outside of a few annoying shaky-cam type bits.
