Unknown to everyone but his shady Middle Eastern bosses, watchmaker Hawkins (Alastair Sim) is actually a professional hired assassin with a predilection for killing his targets with bombs. After disposing of a dictator and millionaire, Hawkins is assigned to kill a politician who is heading to a remote hotel, The Green Man, for a secret tryst with his secretary. There, however, Hawkins' plot is discovered by vacuum salesman William Blake (George Cole), who determines to stop him.

A marvellous murderous farce involving vacuum cleaner salesmen, bodies in pianos, a drunken trio of female musicians, BBC Radio Announcers and the wonderful Alistair Sim as an assassin attempting to kill a philandering politician who has hired a room for some illicit fun with a young lady at the Green Man Hotel. The unique Terry Thomas and veteran comedienne Dora Bryan get thrown into the mix, and there is also an appearance by Arthur Brough (Mr Grainger from 'Are You Being Served') as the landlord of The Green Man.
