When his son Benjie is accused of killing a stagecoach driver, Sheriff Sam Galt (Sterling Hayden) is convinced his boy is innocent. On a quest to clear his son's name, Galt spares no expense in hiring lawyers. While Galt's position as town sheriff raises suspicions of police misconduct, he makes it clear he won't stand in the way of the law. But that certainty is thrown into doubt when Galt goes on a search for the real murderer -- and makes a startling discovery.

Martin B My opinion Sterling Hayden couldn't act to save his life but he was a brilliant man and picked good movies to associate himself with. This movie is simply brilliant. No way anyone could predict all the twists and turns in this yarn nor the way it would come out. The western genre is loaded with predictable nonsense that is formula. This western the opposite of formula. Any critic that thinks westerns have to have some culminating battle and simplistic climax of good over evil and rate this unfavorably aren't up to judging a completely unique western in it's own class such as The Iron Sheriff. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/14/23 Full Review Audience Member This one was very good. Yes I highly recommend it James Welch, Henderson, Arkansas February 13, 2023. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/14/23 Full Review Audience Member The worst Western movie ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/28/23 Full Review Audience Member Terrific movie, all in all. On so many grounds it is mediocre: no action, unenthusiastic performances, though a good cast. Sterling is glum throughout. But the unraveling of the plot, the piece by piece discovery of what happened and who the guilty party was is just great. Stay with it. A must-see Western. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/21/23 Full Review Audience Member I found myself gripped from the start but it did become a bit over-complicated towards the end. Could also be improved with a better cast. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/21/23 Full Review Audience Member Certainly an enjoyable enough western and Sterling Hayden races against time to save his son. The screenplay is fairly two-dimensional though. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/06/23 Full Review Read all reviews
