Alissa Wilkinson New York Times Bringing several types of filmmaking, amateur and professional, together for a movie like this makes that message all the more powerful. Oct 3, 2025 Full Review Robert Abele Los Angeles Times The movie, its many strands brilliantly threaded for maximum impact, is also an argument for the necessity of independent inquiry, and for a reassessment of what a “true crime” documentary means when the lion’s share of attention goes to sensationalized. Cali C A must watch, as a conservative, to remind why we must have a 2 party pol system w bleeding heart libs in the mix. Say what U will about Trump, once brought to his attention, I think he will get to this issue. Something needs to be done & I think this is yet another problem that only Trump can fix. Knowing him he will find a way to save millions while fixing a corrupt crooked system & these men can be treated like human beings. I have no drought there is graft on graft in the AL prison systems. 1st thing is to have public cameras regulated that can NEVER be shut off & controlled outside the prison system. One thing for sure waking crooked corpse Biden did nothing during the height of this because there was no money in it for HIM! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/01/25 Full Review Keith K Christ on the Cross, this was not an easy watch. Man. Like, you imagine prison’s bad, but, somehow still American and democratic, with a small minimum of rights protected. Nope. Absolutely haunting. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/24/25 Full Review Acacia P. One of the most appalling things I’ve ever seen! I don’t know how those prisons weren’t stormed by the military within the first 48 hours of this airing and every correctional officer that has more than 5 filed complaints investigated while the few that are left are supervised every second. It’s so sad that people can treat other people that way. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/23/25 Full Review Alexandra B Everyone should watch this documentary. The prisoners literally put their lives on the line to make this and it is incredibly powerful. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/22/25 Full Review TheMovieSearch R The Alabama Solution is a sobering and unsettling documentary that tackles one of America’s most disturbing realities — the inhumane conditions and systemic abuse within Alabama’s prison system. It’s not an easy watch, nor should it be. The filmmakers deserve credit for pulling viewers directly into the brutal and oppressive environment that inmates endure, capturing the pain, fear, and hopelessness that define life behind those walls. There’s a raw honesty in its presentation that forces the audience to confront the truth rather than shy away from it. That said, while the documentary succeeds in revealing the horrifying circumstances, it occasionally stumbles in its storytelling approach. At times, the pacing feels uneven, and certain sequences linger too long without delivering new insight. The direction leans heavily into shock value — and while that works initially to jolt the viewer, it risks numbing the impact as the film goes on. The narration and editing also feel somewhat disjointed, creating a sense of repetition that weakens the emotional punch. Despite those flaws, The Alabama Solution does accomplish one of the most vital things a documentary can do: it makes you think, it makes you angry, and it makes you want to do something. The filmmakers clearly poured heart and purpose into the project, and the effort shows in the film’s ability to illuminate issues that often remain hidden. The footage of guards abusing prisoners and the lack of accountability within the system is infuriating and heartbreaking, grounding the film in authenticity. Where the film falls short, however, is in balance and structure. While the documentary offers valuable insight into the abuse, it doesn’t spend enough time exploring the “solution” part of its own title. The audience walks away informed — but not necessarily empowered with answers or pathways to reform. It feels like a documentary that stops just shy of greatness, delivering powerful truths but missing the connective tissue that could’ve elevated it into something unforgettable. In the end, The Alabama Solution is an important, necessary film — one that deserves recognition for its courage and its message, even if it struggles at times with focus and flow. It’s not a documentary most will ever want to revisit, but it’s one that absolutely needs to be seen at least once. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 10/18/25 Full Review Brooke W. There are documentaries that feel hard to watch but necessary to view. The Alabama Solution is one of them. This is a film that must be seen. It is powerful, moving, and heartbreaking. Through the grainy phone you see humans fighting for themselves because they have been left to suffer. Possible Oscar contender? I think so.
