Audience Member *spoilers-kinda* Nothing much really happens. I kept waiting for something to happen and it never did. They didn't really explain what happened to them all those years ago. Was he stabbed? Why? Was he robbed? Was Tina really his illegitimate child that she had told him had died out of vengeance because he fell in love with the other guy? So much unanswered. Also, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, I never get why people say he is such a great actor. I'm not sure the man showed more that one or 2 expressions on his face in the whole movie. Usually just stone straight expressionless. And his voice is a little grating without the hinky American accent. I think he is best at just strutting around and entering a room really fast in a huff. I don't know how he made a career out of that. I guess being pretty helps. As always the Redgraves gave a good performance. If you want to watch it go ahead. It's not terrible. It's just not very good either. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/03/23 Full Review Audience Member The dialogue seemed a bit contrived in certain scenes, but overall good movie based on an old book. I only read short excerpts from the original work by Henry James, but I imagine they tried to stay true to James' words. Vanessa Redgrave and Joely Richardson were great. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/15/23 Full Review Audience Member Facinating story with lots of undercurrents. J.RMeyers is brilliant like he was on The Tudors. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/16/23 Full Review Frances H Compelling version of the Henry James story with excellent actors who deliver and lushly beautiful art direction. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/11/19 Full Review Audience Member I thought JRM did a wonderful job but got no credit! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/04/23 Full Review Audience Member I thought that The Aspern Papers was a splendid movie, absolutely faithful to the author, Henry James. Tim Cogshell FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) This isn't very good but for the Redgrave family... They just eat the scenery. Sep 14, 2019 Full Review Glenn Kenny RogerEbert.com [A] peculiar and ineffectual film. Rated: 1.5/4 Jan 11, 2019 Full Review Thelma Adams AARP Movies for Grownups The drama features opulent production design (the floral arrangements!), providing ample eye candy for fans of period movies. Rated: 3/5 Jan 11, 2019 Full Review Hagan Osborne FILMINK (Australia) ...a woefully melodramatic and ill-conceived tale of obsession that fails to boil past a simmer. Rated: 8/20 Apr 1, 2021 Full Review Natasha Alvar MovieBabble I will applaud the movie on one thing; it has made me want to read the book again. Henry James, here I come. Rated: C+ Mar 7, 2021 Full Review Diana Mangas Los Interrogantes Its greatest burden will be its terrible direction of actors that will only get each of its three protagonists to do what they consider appropriate with the character they have in hand.
