Bianca Garner Next Best Picture A thoughtful and insightful documentary that shows the power of communication as well as depicting the aftermath of a traumatic event and the effects of cult mentality. Rated: 9/10 May 5, 2021 Full Review Patrick King Cultured Vultures The Atoning almost becomes arthouse horror, but there's enough B-movie sensibilities about the piece for it to appeal to horror fans of all sorts. Oct 10, 2019 Full Review Frank Ochieng The Critical Movie Critics Who knew that a well-made, small-scale horror fable could be as cautionary to the human condition as mischievous whispers are to the dark? Rated: 3/4 Mar 1, 2019 Full Review Ron Wilkinson It's Just Movies A commendable try at portraying different simultaneous worlds in one film. But, in the end, too ambitious. Rated: 5/10 Oct 20, 2017 Full Review Jacqui Blue Film Inquiry The Atoning is unoriginal and underwhelming at every turn. Even the climatic moments are anti-climatic. Oct 4, 2017 Full Review Jennie Kermode Eye for Film Less sophisticated than it seems to think, The Atoning is nevertheless an effective little fable whose underlying horrors are very much a part of the real world. Logan D While his parents having issues with each other, Sam begins to wonder why he isn't allowed to leave the house. A respectable attempt at an idea perhaps too big for the budget. Even practical effects can be better than just a costume. I'm sure there's a way to have something dripping off of the monsters or at least a fog machine. Still, Virginia Newcome and Cannon Bosarge impress as the mother and son. I would like to see this remade with a larger budget. Certainly one of the better low budget horrors. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 08/14/24 Full Review angela Everything was fine until the psychic/medium came on. I suddenly thought I was watching an R.L. Stein Goosebumps episode. Maybe I'll watch the rest some other day. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 12/11/22 Full Review michael p This movie could have been something. Then it went off course to try and explain what all happened in the first place. It was alright. But there are better horror movies. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 09/07/22 Full Review Audience Member A good depiction of paying for our deeds even after death. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/02/23 Full Review Audience Member If you're looking to spend some time on a movie that had some potential to be a good one, but lost its way somewhere along the line, this is the movie. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/17/23 Full Review Audience Member It was fine - very slow-moving, the plot seemed like it was trying to be filled with twists but never really quite succeeded. The ending was extremely unsatisfying. I am the type of person who loves almost all movies and will find excuses to like even bad movies, but this one... I would not watch it again.
