Noel Murray Los Angeles Times A thin plot and a distractingly jaunty score hold "The Bastards' Fig Tree" back. But for the most part, this is a thought-provoking historical fairy tale about the values - and grudges - that survive whomever's in power. May 10, 2019 Full Review Víctor López G. Espinof It is not only the film about the Spanish Civil War that we deserve, but also the one that we need. [Full Review in Spanish] Aug 6, 2019 Full Review Leigh Monson Birth.Movies.Death. For as slight as The Bastards' Fig Tree is, I can't say I didn't have a good time watching it. Jun 4, 2019 Full Review Dennis Schwartz Dennis Schwartz Movie Reviews An absorbing film on the lingering effects of fascism. Rated: B- May 31, 2019 Full Review Roger Moore Movie Nation Grim, unsatisfying...probably not the fable about fascism that Western Civilization needs to see right now. Rated: 2/4 May 29, 2019 Full Review Andrew Emerson Film Threat The Bastards' Fig Tree isn't primarily an interrogation of history, and it never explicitly addresses all of these thorny issues. But by virtue of its setting and narrative material, the film still ends up making a political statement. Rated: 6/10 May 23, 2019 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member Technically "The Bastard Fig Tree" isn't horror, though there is some horrific actions taken on behalf of horrific ideology. Still thanks to some gothically framed characters, haunting and fantasy-like cinematography there is an air of dark fairytale inspiration enveloping the story. Despite the more dark dramatic style of story telling "The Bastard Fig Tree" is a beautifully tragic, and captivating film. The acting is superb. The characters are layered and familiar. And the story, even as it is set in a historical point, is very relevant to now. Ana Murugarren is very direct in telling the story as a classic morality tale. The use on the antagonist as transformative, becoming the protagonist and caretaker of the story's heart is brilliant. The horror elements happen within very dramatic, chilling scenes where sheer cruelty and calculative action of man's own ideology. Violence and social cleansing of people who's views differ with such finality is horrifying. Fascists, Nazis, Death Squads, White Supremacy, all terrifying and disturbing similar. This makes "The Bastard Fig Tree" recognizable and relevant today as it is to history. The film is subtitled, but it is definitely worth watching Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/12/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating
