Frank Scheck Hollywood Reporter Gains immeasurably from the extended presence of Travis County D.A. Ronnie Earle. Jun 29, 2006 Full Review Kyle Smith New York Post The slipshod documentary The Big Buy plays Whac-a-Mole with Tom DeLay, the former House majority leader who recently stepped down in the wake of the Jack Abramoff scandal. Rated: .5/4 May 26, 2006 Full Review Jeannette Catsoulis New York Times Styled as a film noir -- possibly because the shoestring budget precluded adequate lighting -- the movie guides us through the events leading up to Mr. DeLay's indictment for illegal use of campaign contributions in the 2002 Texas Legislature elections. Rated: 2/5 May 25, 2006 Full Review Rob Thomas Capital Times (Madison, WI) The guy must own a chutzpah mine. Rated: 3/4 Jun 30, 2006 Full Review Chris Barsanti Filmcritic.com certainly competent enough, but no more so than a few newspaper articles on the same subject. Rated: 2.5/5 Jun 1, 2006 Full Review Frank Swietek One Guy's Opinion For some viewers, it will be a simple hatchet-job; for others, a joy to watch. The truth is, it's both. Audience Member Garbage documentary. Completely demeaning to the case against DeLay. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 02/20/23 Full Review Audience Member Unfocused, repetitive, and worst of all - boring! What should have been a slam dunk documentary about one of the worst blights on the modern age of politics instead turns out to be a damn shame. Ronnie Earle, the district attorney at the center of the film, says, “This isn’t about Democrats and Republicans, this is about cops and robbers.” If only the makers of this film could have been so concise at some point in the first reel or two of their documentary as to what it is they were trying to say. Instead, from the start, The Big Buy feels like a film you’ve walked into thirty minutes late. Following the theme stated by Earle of cops and robbers, The Big Buy is supposed to have a film noir aesthetic, but the intended use of light and shadow is so intermittent you likely won’t notice. Somewhere in this mess is a good film and a better story, to bad it’s not being told here. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/26/23 Full Review Audience Member Explains how the GOP was able to gerrymander the vote. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/22/23 Full Review Audience Member Important, somewhat depressing, movie expressing the result of voter apathy in Texas.
