Audience Member Also called "American Women". Delightful! Fun. Sweet film from Ireland. A great story about "the grass is always greener", and what lengths people will go to for love. Really enjoyed.... Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/07/23 Full Review Audience Member Beautifully filmed with quaint Irish seaside views. A delightful film in which the fish are out of water in their own pond. The men in a small Irish village cannot see their own perfect mates right before their eyes. It takes both the promise and threat of exotic newcomers coming to the village to make them realize that what they wanted was there right in front of them whole time. Fun and charming film with plenty of character. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/23/23 Full Review Frances H The Closer You Get is one of those delightful movies the Irish seem to do so well about everyday life in a tiny remote village where everybody knows everybody else, and they are all eccentric characters capable of a great deal of naive charm. What starts the comic war of the sexes here, is when the single men of the village try to advertise to get some "sophisticated" and "exotic" American girls to marry by placing an ad in the Miami Herald. The local women find out and , although at first they are amused, they rapidly come to see the men's obsession as an insult to their feminine charms. When they take their own steps to find "exotic" male companionship, hilarity ensues. Although not enormously profound, the warm humanity of the characters and the beauty of the wild Irish coastal village make this a thoroughly enjoyable and entertaining way to spend time at the movies.
