Claudia Puig FilmWeek (LAist) The performances are good, but I wanted more complexity for the original folk tale of La Llorona. Sep 27, 2019 Full Review Mark Kermode Kermode & Mayo's Film Review I was so bored, and so depressed by the mechanics of it. May 6, 2019 Full Review Benjamin Lee Guardian A formulaic slab of supernatural dirge destined to be forgotten by year's, or perhaps even month's, end. Rated: 2/5 May 3, 2019 Full Review David Day Horror Movie Talk ...A predictable and slow jumpscare movie that failed to make me care about anyone at all. I would have been just as happy had La Llorona eaten the whole family. Rated: 4/10 Aug 11, 2025 Full Review Calum Cooper Source (Scotland) I completely checked out by the halfway mark, occasionally made to sit upright by the obnoxiously loud noises the film mistakes for scares. Rated: 1/5 Jul 14, 2024 Full Review Manuel São Bento MSB Reviews It’s not nearly as horrible as The Nun, and honestly, that’s a good compliment for such a typical, cliche horror flick. Michael Chaves truly saves what could have been a disaster with another director. Rated: C+ Jul 24, 2023 Full Review Read all reviews

HELENA If you want to scared, go see this movie. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/27/24 Full Review BRizz 2 The Curse of La Llorona isn’t a great movie—let’s just be honest about that—but it’s also not a complete disaster. The script is a bit wonky and scattered, making the story feel uneven. That said, the film still managed to hold my attention while it was on, and I could follow the characters for the most part without feeling completely lost. One thing the movie does get right is the cinematography—it’s atmospheric, polished, and visually striking. The direction also works well in terms of framing the scares and following the beats laid out in the script. And then there’s Linda Cardellini—she’s a fantastic actress, and I always enjoy seeing her on screen. She brings sincerity to every role, and here she’s one of the movie’s biggest strengths. I can’t give this a full thumbs-up, but I’m not giving it a thumbs-down either. I wouldn’t call it “rotten,” but I’d put it right on the borderline. This is one of those hit-or-miss horror films—you might really enjoy it, or you might really hate it, and there’s plenty of room for middle ground. I personally land in that middle space because while the movie delivers on the horror elements, it stumbles when it comes to a cohesive, compelling story. If they ever decided to revisit this in a sequel with a tighter, more focused script, I honestly think La Llorona could have the potential to be something truly memorable. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 08/10/25 Full Review Audience Member More of a Whimper Than a Wail: A Soulless Take on a Terrifying Legend As a Mexican-American, I grew up with the chilling tale of La Llorona—the "Wailing Woman" whose mournful cries signal doom. The legend is a cornerstone of our folklore, rich with tragedy, maternal grief, and pure, primal terror. I went into The Curse of La Llorona with incredibly high hopes, eager to see this iconic specter given the terrifying big-screen treatment she deserves. What I got instead was a profoundly unimpressive and deeply disappointing film that felt more like a cheap parody than a genuine horror movie. The most glaring issue is the plot, which is so formulaic and thin it’s insulting. The film discards the deep psychological horror of the legend in favor of a paint-by-numbers haunting story. It follows a predictable sequence of jump scares that are loud but never frightening, and telegraphed so far in advance they lose all impact. There is no suspense, no building dread—just a series of contrived set pieces that feel disconnected and emotionally hollow. The narrative could have been about any generic ghost, and swapping in La Llorona felt like a cynical marketing ploy rather than a story told with purpose. The execution is further cheapened by sub-standard acting and a baffling lack of cultural authenticity. The performances are largely flat, with characters making nonsensical decisions that serve only to move them from one scare to the next. Even more jarring were the painfully fake Spanish accents, which were so distracting they completely shattered any hope of immersion. For anyone familiar with the culture, these elements don't just feel lazy; they feel disrespectful. It’s a Hollywood caricature of a culture, rather than an honest engagement with it. Ultimately, The Curse of La Llorona is a colossal missed opportunity. It takes a powerful, culturally significant ghost story and strips it of all its soul, nuance, and genuine terror. Instead of exploring the themes of loss, guilt, and feminine rage inherent in the legend, the film delivers a shallow, forgettable entry in the horror genre. This isn't the story of La Llorona I grew up fearing; this is a hollow echo, unworthy of the legend's name. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 08/02/25 Full Review Chris M Honestly, I watch a lot of horror movies and don’t understand the hate. Thrilling, suspenseful and gripping with a great cast and plot. Such a good film, highly recommend! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/28/25 Full Review Pedro Henrique C The Curse of La Llorona is one of the worst horror movies ever made, I don't think I could find any good in this piece of crap. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 05/17/25 Full Review Max K It's a generic and soulless horror film. It uses cheap scares, has a shallow script and poorly developed characters. The threat never convinces, and the film completely wastes the potential of the legend. No real consequences happen — neither the children die, nor the protagonist — taking away any tension. One of the worst in the Conjuring universe. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 05/16/25 Full Review Read all reviews
