Tim Robey Daily Telegraph (UK) What looks at first like a boxing drama tries to invent “weight-loss drama” as a genre all its own. The all-round exertion is immense, but the experience is a bizarre ordeal. Rated: 2/5 Sep 5, 2025 Full Review Peter Sobczynski RogerEbert.com While the film may not go about its expected narrative path, it never quite manages to make itself into anything interesting or edifying and winds up wasting an undeniably committed performance from Orlando Bloom in the process. Rated: 2/4 Sep 5, 2025 Full Review Deborah Ross The Spectator It’s a story that’s been told umpteen times but what set this apart, I would suggest, is its deep and unremitting unpleasantness. Sep 4, 2025 Full Review MaryAnn Johanson Flick Filosopher A real aspect of boxing — dangerously fast weight loss — sports films have ignored becomes body horror we have not seen before. The genre’s motivational clichés get twisted, nastily and poignantly. Rated: 4/5 Sep 26, 2025 Full Review Leo Brady AMovieGuy.com With a powerful, committed performance from Orlando Bloom and great ambition behind the camera, The Cut doesn’t land a knockout punch, but it does go the distance. Rated: 2.5/4 Sep 19, 2025 Full Review Tom Cassidy Common Sense Media A cautionary tale of unprocessed trauma, the film lands a hard-hitting message about perspective: What success really means, and whether the price is worth it. Dr.J Good performances, not your typical "Rocky" story. More realistic as to the desires, means and consequences of being a fighter. It was a bit too repetitive in making its point -- the length an aging boxer will go to in order to have his last hurrah -- and so it got a bit tedious. Otherwise, interesting and reccomended. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 09/07/25 Full Review Patrick C Orlando Bloom plays an Irish boxer who missed his opportunity at greatness during a title fight due to his traumatic upbringing. 10 years later and now teaching boxing to his local youth, he's granted the opportunity at a title fight when a fellow boxer passes away. However, with only 6 days to cut 26 pounds, he becomes desperate, ignoring the advice of his team and enlists Boz (John Turturro) to help him get under the agreed upon weight of 154 pounds before the weigh-in. A boxing film that isn't a boxing film but rather shows the dangers more competitive fighters are having to resort to in order to meet weight demands. It's a story that's becoming more common with the margin of error shrinking and the consequences potentially deadly. Bloom plays his most physically demanding role to date. He's in arguably the best shape of his life but for most of the film, carries on as an exhausted zombie. Not fully aware of his surroundings and prone to hallucinations. It's insane to think fighters go to these lengths in order to meet their weight and then turn around and have to fight at these types of physical exhaustion levels. Turturro plays the role of Boz wonderfully: a no nonsense trainer who calmly tells you how it's going to be without any emotional involvement. He's a drill sergeant without the yelling. A manipulative motivator without having to use the stick in order to gain acceptance of his ideas. However, while I applaud a light being shown onto the dangers of these types of actions, as a film, it ultimately plays as a dry and at times, redundant film. Probably some of Bloom's and Turturro's best work that'll either quickly be forgotten or not viewed at all. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 09/29/25 Full Review Lucky01 The cut movie poster got me so hyped to watch the film. But after watching it, I was really disappointed. I thought it was about boxing, but it turned out to be about weight loss instead. Orlando Bloom’s performance is amazing, but overall, the movie didn’t meet my expectations. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 09/24/25 Full Review Denise N Great film, absorbing from the outset and offers the opportunity to viewers to interpret this cleverly delivered film as they would like. You’re brought on the journey in an immersive storyline, thoroughly enjoyed!!
