What to Know

Critics Consensus

Swapping out derring-do for ultraviolence, this grim take on the merry legend of Robin Hood could use some more levity in its quiver, but its aim of exploring the complicated humanity behind a folk hero nails the target.

While its visceral violence unfolds brutally at a punishing pace, Hugh Jackman still hits the mark in The Death of Robin Hood.

The Death of Robin Hood requires you to surrender your illusions at the door. Forget about the Robin Hood who robbed the rich and gave to the poor. Forget about the Lincoln green outfit and the feather in the cap. Go to Full Review

The question of whether a mass audience is going to go for such a down-in-the-mouth interpretation is hard to guess... But Sarnoski's beautifully made and surpassingly bleak period piece is fascinating nevertheless. Go to Full Review

Hugh Jackman digs deep into the role of the oldest, most broken Robin Hood ever. Gifted director Michael Sarnoski goes heavy on dour, not for those expecting a madcap romp to help them forget their troubles and just get happy. Go to Full Review

I deeply love how the film uses the power of storytelling to examine how myth is born out of lies, but how those lies are born out of truth. Go to Full Review

[Michael] Sarnoski’s reimagining may not be for everyone, but for those willing to relinquish expectations, it is a fascinating exploration of the flexibility of myth and legend. Go to Full Review

Frenchie 51m The first half is a tough watch but it sets up the profound second half dispensing life lessons for all eternity. See more Melanie S 1h I, and I think many others, wasn't prepared for this movie but it is well done! See more Toni 4h Dismal, dark movie that disappoints from beginning to end. One of the worst movies I’ve ever seen See more Glenn Alan 5h This is not how you think of Robin Hood. After 30 minutes, I couldn’t take it anymore. My wife and I walked out. It’s a shame. Lots of gore and killing, even of children, very explicit. See more aimee 15h The Death of Robin Hood is a dark reimagining that strips the legend of its fantasy fairytale. While Hugh Jackman delivers a raw, powerful turn as Robin Hood, portraying the aging outlaw at his most vulnerable—gritty, battle-scarred, and haunted... by his past. Bill Skarsgård is also amazing.. Seriously tho, is there a role out there Bill Skarsgård will not completely disappear into? Too much in this one to where he does actually disappear. I feel like he needed more screen time.. his departure bothered me.. honestly... That being said. The film is striking, a bleak cynical story that follows a tired old Robin Hood cursing the lies and fairy tales told about him because he knows that dark truth. Jodi Comer as a healer dives into her role well. She becomes his salvation in way.. You definitely feel Logan moments in this movie with Little John's daughter margaret. Its got some violence.. animal killing.. and its a longer movie with slower pacing.. This will not be for everyone. It had some really beautiful moments/shots.. Especially in the night sky. I'm giving this film a 3.5 star rating. See more Vincent 16h Very good movie. Great cast. When this hits streaming, people will realize what they missed See more Read all reviews
