Jane D I loved this movie on so many levels. Having gone through a traumatic birth with my son and the absolute torrent of conflicting emotions and stress on my marriage I can understand why she wants to disappear. It's just too much to lose a child after carrying them for so long and wanting them so badly -- its impossible to reconcile that loss and a couple could crack. McAvoy as the husband, Conor, is trying so hard to bear up after his wife's attempted suicide and her taking off, he is really tormented. She goes to her mother, but the mother fixates on her own loss of her youth and missed opportunities due to her own decision to have children. It's really a film about deep grief for what could have been. Chastain gives credible performance as Eleanor, but she is really so wrapped up in her own little bubble of grief she trys to keep everyone, including her husband from getting in. The pacing in these is normally slower than other Genres; however, this one is a little too slow. The story is really very good. There are a lot of great elements in it. The most significant, salient feature revolves around the performances. James MacAvoy, Jessica Chastain, the late William Hurt, and, even, Bill Hader all give compelling, top rate performances. The movie has a gimmick in that there are three perspectives to: his, hers, and theirs. Regardless it is not enough to save this movie from being too long and having the mind start to wander by the 59 minute mark. Watchable, but not as good as it could have been. It's way too drawn out. It did not capture my emotions or attention at all and I barely made it to the end. In fact I left at one point . A review convinced me to ride it out. What a waste of time. The acting is stiff and the actors try too hard to squeeze meaning out of what they say but to no avail. Characters don't seem to care about one another. The script is trite. Something sad has happened but are we presented with what happened in detail or how it affected the characters, so that we can care about them? Not much. Too little too late, I'd say. Everyone skirts around one another. It's much ado about nothing. Nothing romantic, nothing smart, nothing endearing, nothing engaging.
