This quirky romantic comedy follows Rose (Greta Gerwig), whose life changes after discovering her husband's affair. Devastated and reeling, she soon crosses paths with a marooned British teenager (Olly Alexander) in a boarded-up Delaware beach town, and the two begin a peculiar friendship. As they drink their way through town, act out dream scenarios, and get to know each other's pasts, this eccentric and insightful film illustrates how we navigate change and loneliness, for better and worse.

Erica Lies Bitch Media Gerwig's Rose is genuinely affected by her despair but never slips into a generic "crazy" performance that could easily happen in such a role. Jan 7, 2021 Full Review Stephen Holden New York Times Beautifully photographed, "The Dish & the Spoon" is awash in images of rain-soaked streets and gray wintry skies. Rated: 4/5 Feb 9, 2012 Full Review Nick Schager Slant Magazine Not so much an actual movie as an assortment of Amerindie affectations, The Dish & the Spoon doesn't waste a moment on recognizable reality, consumed as it is with checking off various items from its list of clichs. Rated: 1.5/4 Feb 7, 2012 Full Review Marya E. Gates Cool People Have Feelings, Too. (Substack) The two have an offbeat chemistry that makes the film work Feb 13, 2024 Full Review Gerald Peary Boston Phoenix Director Alison Bagnall crafts a model independent film, a miniature story told with feeling and humor... Rated: 3/4 Apr 10, 2012 Full Review Prairie Miller NewsBlaze Less dish than dishrag, Greta's broken woman does a stunning, kind of Albert Nobbs role reversal stud predator in drag. But this road movie detour into destination cautionary cougar romance, is not nearly as daring as its whimsical if troubled humans. Jan 31, 2012 Full Review Read all reviews

Hanna H This is one of those movies where you don't remember much of the plot but bits and pieces but it leaves a profound mark, I don't even know what I love so much about this movie but I do love it. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 10/02/24 Full Review Steve D Gerwig is always fun but there isn't enough to it. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/20/23 Full Review Audience Member Honestly... not what I was expecting... it was definitely different. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/22/23 Full Review Audience Member Two casually artistic characters (one quirky, one twee) mumble and meander across a landscape filtered through Belle & Sebastian. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/14/23 Full Review Audience Member It's fully possible the presence of alcohol, sleeping pills and bitterness present in my system at the time of viewing provided me with such a favorable opinion of this movie. Seemingly sort of searing--given the strange, happenstance, and all too often transient (read: doomed) situations we find ourselves in, I couldn't help but identify, I guess. Or just appreciate. And the soundtrack was kind of nice, too, I think. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/20/23 Full Review Audience Member This movie starts off about Rose's marital issues, but quickly turns into a twisted romance between Rose and a British teenager she finds. The movie sort of spirals into different directions from there until Rose finally confronts the woman her husband cheated on her with. That doesn't amount to much, though, and she ends up ditching the teenager she strung along to return to her husband. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/05/23 Full Review Read all reviews
