Lex ("PEN15's" Anna Konkle) and Mani ("Coming 2 America's" Jermaine Fowler) are a happily married young couple, running their dream artisanal bakery in Los Angeles and excited about starting a family together. A trip to a tropical island resort for a friend's destination wedding, coinciding with Lex's ovulation cycle, feels like the perfect opportunity to conceive. But good vibes and high hopes are cut short when, shortly after their arrival to paradise, Lex accidentally drops her friend's (Aparna Nancherla, "Search Party") baby in front of all their friends. Paradise becomes purgatory for our couple as recriminations, passive-aggression and old wounds begin to permeate the island reunion and throw Mani and Lex's future into deep uncertainty.

Critics Consensus

The Drop has its finger on the pulse and a game cast trying to keep it alive, but despite its heart being in the right place, this comedy's electrocardiogram is as flat as the Great Plains.

Randy Myers San Jose Mercury News Sarah Adina Smith’s comedy is bereft of laughs, leaving us stuck with irritating people. Rated: 1.5/4 Jan 26, 2023 Full Review Richard Roeper Chicago Sun-Times ...a collection of characters who are thoroughly unlikable but great fun to watch. Alas, while they are indeed one odious bunch, they wear out their welcome long before we’re subjected to one last cheap joke and mercifully fading to black. Rated: 2/4 Jan 14, 2023 Full Review Luke Y. Thompson AV Club The Drop isn’t really about dropping a baby. But it’s not about much else, either. Jan 13, 2023 Full Review Ally Ham The Review Geek There was a more nuanced (and humorous) depiction of parental and marital anxiety to be had, but The Drop at least concludes with a unique and heartwarming message–the saving grace for an uneven, sort-of-funny comedy. Jeff This whole movie is like that feeling when you do something stupid and are deeply embarassed by it. Of course, it's turned way up. It touches well on how external beauty and present relaxation can be completely sabotaged when your internal thoughts and concerns are in the way. I think the emotions and vibes it creates are unique and captivating, making me feel some type of way. The pace really lets the characters' unique quirks come through. I particularily thought Aparna Nancherla's character was wild and absolutely hilarious. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/19/24 Full Review Yvonne W Jermaine Fowler's subtle humor was what I appreciated most but the rest of the casting felt off. Maybe it was more the writing than the casting or the pace. I didn't care about any of the characters except for Fowler. It had a depressing feel to it all. A group of uninteresting, saddish people I wish I had never been introduced to. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 09/03/23 Full Review It's going to be ok- J One of the worst movies I've seen in a very long time. None of the characters were likeable, and some were downright gross (like the pervy teen and his touchy feely father). It was like a mash-up of plots that never came together. The whole time I was wondering, "why are these people friends?" and they didn't seem like they were. They acted like people who didn't know each other. Hard pass Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 03/19/23 Full Review Torin F THE DROP's shocking and funny premise really only serves to elevate tensions among the group, and this little movie soon settles into its stride as a rather subdued comedy of manners. Chuckle-worthy, but not much more. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/18/23 Full Review Amy F I am not normally a fan of comedies but was in a mood and this popped up. I laughed so hard at this movie and even though the acting can be a bit over the top and obvious at times, it is elevated campy and the writers threw some really funny subtle stuff in there. In fact, I found it so funny that I watched it a second time and it was even better; hilarious one liners that you only get after having seen the whole thing. I NEVER watch movies twice so that should mean something and maybe others were just not getting it. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/03/23 Full Review Tricia L Not funny. Quirky, but not enough to carry the entire movie. Just a dud. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/02/23 Full Review Read all reviews
