ronald h Pretentious, unlikable characters; pretentious dialogue; and pretentious, pseudo-artsy direction (What's with all the car windows covered in raindrops, one of the most overdone tropes in the history of movies?). I didn't give a damn about any of the unsufferable people in this film. Neither will you. And of you don't care about the people, what's the point of watching? Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member I like the movie! Very good twist! Good performance by Josh Charles and Julia Stiles. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/29/23 Full Review sarah s Huh? I feel sorry for this movie. It had potential with the cast, with the idea...but fell so short. The movie lacks a straight plot and cohesion between scenes and seems to repeat the same scenes only with different lines and in different places. The wrong loose ends are barely tied at the end and the actual ending? I...just...I'm so disappointed. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member One of the worst programs I've ever seen. Terrible acting, terrible storyline Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/01/23 Full Review Audience Member Great movie to watch with your family and friends. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/04/23 Full Review Audience Member I watched this because I like Josh Charles. He must have been having a hard time paying his bills to accept this part. The movie had no clear story, no plot, and a ridiculous ending. The characters' actions never made any sense. I was left with so many questions that were never answered. It's almost as if every other page of the script was lost, they filmed the movie anyway, and added dramatic music. It's hard to believe anyone invested money in making this. David Edelstein New York Magazine/Vulture The movie is a prime specimen of "the paranoid style." May 17, 2017 Full Review Sheri Linden Hollywood Reporter Despite the wildly uneven plotting, Gordon's atmospheric direction in coastal New London propels the drama, as does her sensitivity to what remains unspoken between people. May 11, 2017 Full Review Kenji Fujishima Village Voice The deeper Tom wades into this psychological morass, the more Danny's volatile behavior seems dictated by the screenwriters' convenience rather than by any plausible depiction of a tortured mind. May 11, 2017 Full Review Todd Jorgenson Cinemalogue The performances help to create some tension if you can buy the outlandish premise, although the character motives remain cloudy and the contrived third-act twists keep the payoff at a frustrating emotional distance. Jun 5, 2017 Full Review Mark Dujsik Mark Reviews Movies The whole affair is a head-scratcher of bloody-scalp proportions. Rated: 1.5/4 May 18, 2017 Full Review Andy Crump Paste Magazine The Drowning is a film of small, visceral pleasures-its ambiguity is absolutely delicious-but most of its weight rests on Charles.
