Critics Consensus

The power of Crowe compels up to a point in this metatextual riff on the possession genre, but The Exorcism's greatest sin is ultimately falling back on clichés.

Like Godard’s Tout Va Bien, the (figuratively and literally) storied set can make the viewer feel like a voyeur. The pacing can be too stately, but an impressive ensemble working through a surfeit of good ideas compensates for the lack of jump scares. Go to Full Review

What's frustrating about this is that it had potential. Go to Full Review

No self-respecting demon would want their IMDb page stunk up with what follows: a half-lit, unholy mess in which nothing is explained and nothing makes much sense. Go to Full Review

The scares aren’t that interesting, and some of the jump scares are so loud and quickly cut that I literally didn’t even know what happening. It was just startling and gave me zero information about what was actually going on in the film. Go to Full Review

Despite boasting a unique, modern take on the possession genre, The Exorcism does little to innovate or even so much as entertain with a narrative that peters out into nothingness after a series of eerie yet forgettable scares. Go to Full Review

It turns into just another dispiriting pastiche of the original Exorcist – but sadly without its intelligence or its malevolent sense of dread. Go to Full Review

Jonathan Dec 12 We Are Babymetal 🤘🙂‍↕️ I just started listening 🎶 to Babymetal over a year ago, and ever since I've been playing catch up with their music, which I've grown to love very much. Still can't believe they have been around so long, and i haven't heard of them til recently is crazy.... So for me, seeing one of their concerts on the big screen with their music blasting was pretty f...in amazing! ❤️👏😭 I must say whoever did the editing for this did a great job. It was so intense, and I felt like i was on a roller-coaster watching this. Babymetal killed it. Lastly, MomoMetal has the most infectious smile I've ever seen on the big screen.. 🤘🦊 To The Fox God See more Araku 08/09/2024 Everything you can ask for in a possession horror film. It was almost as good as The Pope's Exorcist. And that's saying a lot. See more Mr. Hollywood 07/13/2024 What a waste. Russell Crowe tries but man is the script bad. Not sure why he chose this but its not good. See more Alex 06/30/2024 The ending was horrible. Did he go to jail? See more Danny 06/29/2024 At least was a different story, but dislike the sloppy work that they didn’t really study the theology of the church that a man, specially fallen man would be able to perform an an exorcism and of course he failed at it, but he stuck a crucifix fixing the said and stomach I thought that was pretty shitty See more Maya O 06/27/2024 Pretty good flick. Looking forward to the director’s cut that will add about 30 minutes back in. See more Read all reviews
