Azizkhuja T "The Eyes of the Mummy" (1918) is a fascinating journey into the world of silent horror cinema, directed by the legendary Ernst Lubitsch. This film stands as a testament to Lubitsch's versatility and pioneering vision in the early days of filmmaking. Unlike his later works that leaned towards romantic comedies and musicals, this film showcases his ability to create suspense and unease, all without the aid of spoken dialogue. Pola Negri, in one of her most compelling performances, breathes life into her character with an intensity that transcends the silent era's limitations. Her portrayal is both nuanced and powerful, capturing the viewer's imagination and drawing them into the eerie, mysterious world of the film. Negri's performance is a highlight, demonstrating her wide range of acting skills and her ability to convey deep emotions and complexities through expressions and body language alone. Ernst Lubitsch, known for his "Lubitsch Touch," brings a unique blend of storytelling and visual innovation to "The Eyes of the Mummy." His direction is precise and engaging, seamlessly weaving together elements of horror and drama to create a timeless cinematic experience. Lubitsch's talent for creating atmospheric tension is evident throughout the film, making it a captivating watch even a century after its release. "The Eyes of the Mummy" is more than just a horror movie; it's a piece of cinematic history that showcases the early talents of Pola Negri and Ernst Lubitsch. Their collaboration on this film left an indelible mark on the genre, influencing future generations of filmmakers and actors. For fans of silent cinema and horror aficionados alike, this film is a must-watch, offering a glimpse into the roots of cinematic suspense and the extraordinary talents that shaped it. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/13/24 Full Review Joel H I decided to watch The Eyes of the Mummy because it was listed as the first surviving mummy film. To be honest, I expected a little more mumminess. I've watched many silent films before, even German silent films, but this one did not impress me. The story seems to consist of mostly filler, with extended party and dance sequences that don't really add anything to the plot. I also found the plot a little difficult to follow at times, which was confusing because this movie doesn't feel that complicated. It seems as if the curse of mummy films being too dry has been around since the beginning of cinema. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 11/05/23 Full Review adam b I actually do like silent films, especially those with creepy vibes. But this heap of crap, I HATE. Complete waste of time with no goddamn mummies Rated 1 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Very old silent film from Germany. If I remember correctly, this was my first silent feature. Worth the watch.. but where was the mummy? Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member Evil Arab craving for revenge! I expected a horror but it was a decent piece of silent melodrama. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/06/23 Full Review Audience Member Early Ernst Lubitsch film without the Lubitsch touch and with a Mummy in sight. Nor a horror movie, but a melodrama about a captive girl who is saved by a dashing young man who brings her back to England where she becomes an exotic dancer and is stalked by the evil Radu. The print is sucky. Pola Negri has a couple of good scenes, especially when she is dancing. Jannings is creepy in blackface. It's short and quick, but still not very interesting.
