Richard Brody New Yorker Jacques Rivette’s career-long exploration of the art and lives of stage actors reaches its emotional peak in the 1989 drama “Gang of Four." Jul 17, 2023 Full Review Jake Cole Slant Magazine Contrary to something like method acting, of a performer digging entirely into the lived reality of a character, The Gang of Four sees the art as reliant on the personal lives and hang-ups that an actor might subconsciously bring to a part. Jan 5, 2023 Full Review Caryn James New York Times An accessible and entertaining vision of how the New Wave has survived and evolved long after it was declared dead. Rated: 3.5/5 Aug 30, 2004 Full Review TV Guide An intriguing, if somewhat overextended, melodrama that delves into Pirandellian questions of real versus theatrical life, and considers the nature of deception and fate. Todor V. D The Gang of Four is a very stylish French film that masterfully plays with color, transitioning from vibrant reds to cool blues in the latter half, creating a captivating visual narrative. This intimate film offers a profound exploration of relationships and the complexities of human emotion, enhanced by amazing cinematography that evokes a warm Parisian atmosphere. The beautifully crafted scene at the train station and the stunning visuals in front of the oval windows, offering an incredible view of the city, elevate the film’s aesthetic. Rivette’s direction transforms it into a true masterpiece, inviting viewers to immerse themselves in its visual and emotional depth. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/18/24 Full Review Audience Member Required viewing for those who want roommates :) Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/07/23 Full Review Audience Member Once again, the three concentric themes, metaphors of our modern condition, paraded out with the same significance: women, theater, conspiracy. Yes, it's just another typical day in Rivette-land, but then, people who like such a place will find much to like in this movie. Those who don't shouldn't see it in the first place; those who've never been there should try one of his earlier movies first. In those films, there is an external world, however dark and mysterious, for the characters to sound off against; in "Gang of Four," everything is internal, in utero (you have to dig the Bergmanian red of the theater), hermetic even. If there is no escape for the characters, there is also no entry for spectator, unless she can find a way onto the stage through one of Rivette's other movies. The film, then, is another dream in Rivette's endless nocturnal reverie, a lucid electrifying nightmare, but one which will appear meaningless unless you bring yourself to it prepared; those who understand it may not find enlightenment, but they will find recognition. (Actually, I don't know what the hell I'm talking about. The point is, the movie kicked ass, and if you like Rivette's other shit, you should see this one too.) Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/03/23 Full Review Audience Member Two and a half hours of interminable scenes of actresses practicing for a play and in the end I didn't even really understand what the movie was about. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 01/29/23 Full Review Audience Member Pas le plus connu des Rivette mais mon préféréé, ludique et grave à la fois. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Audience Member Such great performances. Very theatrical in its setting Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/17/23 Full Review Read all reviews
