The film takes liberties with the source material, but the lighter hopeful tone male it clear from the start that the focus is more on adventure and comradery than deep realism. The cast is great. The film is iconic for Steve McQueen's huge motorcycle jump. The characters are such lovable underdogs, and you really want to see them escape. The soundtrack is terrific, especially the iconic main theme. While the film has a lighter tone due to the eras Hays Code, you still feel the consistent presence of the guards. It's an oddly laid back WWII prison movie. It's satisfying watching the teamwork and comradery amongst the prisoners build up and pay off. The climactic escape through the tunnels was very exciting. Escaping enemy territory soon proves to be much more challenging than escaping the prison. But the film ends on a hopeful note and acknowledges that this escape attempt wasn't all in vain and should still be celebrated. See more Brian D @Brianwd2 Mar 31 71%. 3/30/26. Thought it was decent - would have liked to see it ages ago, of course. Cool that it's based on a true story. Fun to see them building the tunnels and watching the initiial escape. And then watching them all flee as they get hunt down. The motorcycle scene is great. Beyond that, thought it was pretty slow and boring. Interesting how the soldiers were treated well by the Germans since they weren't SS officers. I guess they see it as their duty to escape and put pressure on the enemy, and they didn't know 50 people would be executed on Hitler's orders, but the camp didn't seem that worth breaking out of. Long film, wouldn't rewatch. 1/5 rewatch See more K C @LetPeopleEnjoyThings Feb 22 This movie was my introduction to Steve McQueen, James, Garner,and Charles Bronson. Even as a kid I had so much appreciation for this film. Growing up and learning so much more about it and realizing who all the actors were i.e Richard Attenborough being in jurassic Park, James Gardner being in the Notebook, and even David Mccullam who plays Ducky on NCIS and who ALSO wrote the song (The Edge) which DR DRE sampled for the intro of The Next Episode...this movie is full of great actors and awesome stories. Steve McQueen was going to quit because he wanted too much money or more screen time or something, and Garner convinced him to stay. With this being one of SMq most well known film, he's lucky James convinced him. Only for McQueen to be a drama queen about losing the role in 1966 grand prix to garner. Garner also made Bronson pay debts he owed while playing poker on the set. Charles Bronson never wanted to work with him again because of it haha.
