Christy Lemire FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) It's very sad. A lot of films have explored the nature of instant, viral fame... There is always more of a story there, and that is what this cautionary tale is telling us. Jan 18, 2023 Full Review Richard Roeper Chicago Sun-Times In the end, of course, no one but Kai Lawrence is responsible for the actions of Kai Lawrence. It was a feel-good story that turned horribly tragic. Rated: 3.5/4 Jan 14, 2023 Full Review James Jackson Times (UK) The slight irony with the fable of Kai the hitchhiker is that, while the film seems to be making a valid point about how the reality media is all too vulturine in its race to exploit individuals, here is Kai, still part of the pop-cultural cycle. Rated: 4/5 Jan 11, 2023 Full Review Archi Sengupta LeisureByte.com There’s drama, humour, and just the right amount of questions and answers to keep your curiosity piqued. Rated: 4/5 Jul 9, 2024 Full Review Lee Zumpe Tampa Bay Newspapers For lovers of true crime documentaries, “The Hatchet Wielding Hitchhiker” is expertly crafted and deeply engrossing. Some of the interviewees do provide revealing insights. Aug 23, 2023 Full Review Gael Fashingbauer Cooper CNET The Hatchet-Wielding Hitchhiker is a compelling look at the oddities of internet fame. Dave S The documentary The Hatchet Wielding Hitchhiker tells the story of Kai, a young man who comes to the aid of a woman being attacked in the aftermath of a crime. Charismatic and uninhibited, he quickly becomes a social media sensation…until things take an unexpected turn. A commentary on celebrity culture, the role of media, and mental health, it's an undeniably interesting viewing experience, despite the fact that it shamelessly seems to ignore the root causes of Kai's behavior. With all of the interviews compiled for the film, one would think that a mental health specialist would have been consulted to provide some insight into matters, especially over the latter half of the movie. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 10/21/24 Full Review Jeff M Even though this documentary suggests that Kai McGillvary was one of the biggest viral sensations in modern social media history, I never heard of him and his 2013 rise and fall before sitting down to watch this. It is indeed quite a story, and Kail is quite a character! At less than 90 minutes, this is a lean and efficiently made documentary that inevitably feels a bit superficial and rushed because there's not enough to time to fully delve into the story. I'm grateful it's not another one of those 3-5 episode limited series that feels overly stuffed to fill the running time. But, by contrast, the short running time makes it feel like a series of highlight clips rather than a full-fledged recollection of events. In fact, I think this movie is more successful as an indictment of how the public lionizes and alternately vilifies those in the social media spotlight. The tragedy of events feels minimized because Kai was such an unusual and beguiling character. By the end, there's a lot of unanswered questions, and one is left unsure exactly how much to believe of anything that came out of Kai's mouth. It's quite entertaining, and I won't soon forget this tragic character; however, I was left wanting more. It's an appetizer instead of a main course. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/18/24 Full Review Audience Member an interesting yet disturbing documentary showing what happens when fame is thrust upon someone. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 09/23/24 Full Review Ersan Kaan E Smash, smash, smash.... Yine yaralı bir çocukluk, travmalar, tecavüz öyküsü ve 15 dakikalığına ünlü olmak... ve sadece Amerika'da bu adama realite TV şovu yapmayı düşünürler. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 09/13/23 Full Review Views Of C The Hatchet Wielding Hitchhiker - 6.5/10. In a long assembly line like delivery of Netflix documentaries, here's another one based around the viral star saviour that helped a person out by attacking their attacker. From the lone interview he did, he catapults into fame, and soon, spirals out of it, as the once lonesome hitchhiker's life goes dark with a murder case that he is tied to. Its interesting for me to watch this because I do remember seeing the famous auto tune video of this person. But I never realized how big of a star people were trying to make him. Its a shame because though he seems genuinely like a good person, he obviously is not mentally sound. Instead of getting him help, it seemed like people were more willing to enable to man than actually give him what he needed: shelter and care. Though not a revolutionary documentary, it does a fairly decent job of focusing on the pros and pitfalls of fame. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 08/29/23 Full Review Audience Member Interesting documentary but not a lot of story to it, but if you didn’t follow the case, this will bring you up to speed.
