Critics Consensus

While it's certainly sweet and even somewhat touching, The Holiday is so thoroughly predictable that audiences may end up opting for an early check-out time.

You begin to suspect that Meyers isn't actually a movie director at all, but a features coordinator at World of Interiors. Go to Full Review

The Holiday is as corny as it gets, but in a cinemascape full of macho grunting and aggressive irony, Meyers is perhaps right to believe that corniness is what women - and their boyfriends - will be wanting... Go to Full Review

What makes The Holiday interesting - and worth reexamining more than a decade after its release - is that unlike most holiday-themed movies, it exhorts the viewer to take time for themselves, not just others. It's the ultimate self-care flick. Go to Full Review

Nancy Meyers's wintry romcom serves up sugar-dusted escapism even as it brushes the messier truths of heartbreak under the carpet. Go to Full Review

Nancy Meyers’ hit film is decidedly overlong and overstuffed with Hollywood industry insider talk, but it’s also bright and bouncy, directed with confident flair ... Go to Full Review

It can be considered a lovely comfort film: the conflicts are not so serious, the performances are charming, the locations are beautiful, the romance is mature but never too explicit, and the comedy is gentle and even innocent. [Full review in Spanish]. Go to Full Review

See more Martin C 5h Are professional movie critics a miserable bunch? Judging by their rating of The Holiday, which admittedly has its share of (pop)corny lines, but delivers a double dose of satisfying make-believe romance, it seems so. Cameron Diaz, Jack Black and Eli Wallach are particularly good, Jude Law looks amazing, the girls who play his daughters are a delight, Kate Winslet feels real, and all-in-all, you feel happy watching this charming froth. You can watch it again and again and enjoy it every time. I really like it, and so does at least one friend (I've only discussed it with one, and she really likes it too). The Radio Times gives it only two (out of five) stars, which I think misrepresents the entertainment The Holiday delivers even if, sometimes, your toes curl a little in embarrassment at some (but not much) of the dialogue. I wouldn't give it 5 stars but it's worth at least 3. Can we agree on 4? See more Benjamin H 1d Charming and genuine chemistry between its actors is the fuel for the well-written, touching and smooth The Holiday that, despite being predictable, somewhat cliched and featuring scenes that feels forced in only to state a point, is a compelling picture that blends comedy and romance nicely together. The score is also great (but considering that it is Hans Zimmer who composed, that isn't a shock). See more Read all reviews
