      Critics Consensus

While it's certainly sweet and even somewhat touching, The Holiday is so thoroughly predictable that audiences may end up opting for an early check-out time.

Julie A great holiday movie with a fantastic cast and storyline. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 12/07/23 Full Review Hilife Health Care r I liked the movie. Yes it had corny parts, but on the whole it was quite enjoyable. Eli Wallach was excellent as was the entire cast. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/13/24 Full Review Ram L Summary: Every little millisecond is worth watching—and many milliseconds, worth watching again! For a 50-year-old guy to absolutely love this movie must say something about it! I don't dabble in much movie-speak including such words as "cinematography," so: Every setting, every situation, every interaction has something to it. Every character is so wonderfully well-defined, the movie doesn't deviate from real-life plausibility for a moment. The RT review says the ending is predictable—but I personally didn't think so; I was left wondering what really was going to happen. Even better, it doesn't really seem to matter because we're guided along by the movie into such a beautiful world that magically incorporates the complexities and sadnesses we see... To rephrase: As we sit back and watch, the movie shows us the magic of the actual world we live in; it takes us through a world of pure magic that, when one looks hard at it, is not fantasyland. —> K.W.'s monologue in the second half. C.D.'s trudging through the snow when something... not snaps but joins together in her brain. J.L.'s absolute external steadfastness while still internally being the opposite of a robot. J.B.'s amazingly flamboyant character while appearing almost uneducated... This might even be the best movie I've ever watched after The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/24/24 Full Review Joshua C While it definitely follows the formula of Christmas rom-coms to the letter, Nancy Meyers' "The Holiday" is elevated by its star-studded cast, charming performances, lovely cinematography, festive spirit and relatable central message. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/17/24 Full Review Pragya P the movie is so warm and wholesome. iris's writing in her office, her commuting back to her lovely cottage, the grand house of amanda with the beautiful kitchen and library and the swap of housing. i loved every bit of the movie. it is my xmas holiday tradition. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/08/24 Full Review Gigs V A film I genuinely loved. And was surprised that I loved it so much. Very heartwarming. Touching. Jude Law scenes were epic. And I shed a tear. I couldn’t believe that. Gotta give it bonus points for that alone. The Kate Winslet old man storyline is very endearing. Kate Winslet is just endearing in general. Cameron Diaz is a floop, but to be honest, doesn’t bother me. She’s hot. Doesn’t act badly. Guess it fits her character. Nice locales. Nice scenes. Heartwarming. Quite funny at times. Just a genuinely lovely film. Can definitely see myself watching this again and again (especially at Christmas). Love the arc Winslet’s character has. And the Jude Law/Cameron Diaz dynamic. Anthony Quinn Independent (UK) You begin to suspect that Meyers isn't actually a movie director at all, but a features coordinator at World of Interiors. Apr 2, 2019 Full Review Sukhdev Sandhu Daily Telegraph (UK) The Holiday is as corny as it gets, but in a cinemascape full of macho grunting and aggressive irony, Meyers is perhaps right to believe that corniness is what women - and their boyfriends - will be wanting... Apr 2, 2019 Full Review Anne Cohen Refinery29 What makes The Holiday interesting - and worth reexamining more than a decade after its release - is that unlike most holiday-themed movies, it exhorts the viewer to take time for themselves, not just others. It's the ultimate self-care flick. Dec 27, 2018 Full Review Madeline Roth The Daily Beast Charming and impeccably scored... Dec 5, 2022 Full Review PJ Nabarro Patrick Nabarro Thoroughly preposterous, utter bourgeois fantasy of a romantic comedy.
