Critics Consensus

While it's certainly sweet and even somewhat touching, The Holiday is so thoroughly predictable that audiences may end up opting for an early check-out time.

Anthony Quinn Independent (UK) You begin to suspect that Meyers isn't actually a movie director at all, but a features coordinator at World of Interiors. Apr 2, 2019 Full Review Sukhdev Sandhu Daily Telegraph (UK) The Holiday is as corny as it gets, but in a cinemascape full of macho grunting and aggressive irony, Meyers is perhaps right to believe that corniness is what women - and their boyfriends - will be wanting... Apr 2, 2019 Full Review Anne Cohen Refinery29 What makes The Holiday interesting - and worth reexamining more than a decade after its release - is that unlike most holiday-themed movies, it exhorts the viewer to take time for themselves, not just others. It's the ultimate self-care flick. Dec 27, 2018 Full Review Natasha Alvar Hallmarkies Podcast The Holiday is still so utterly charming. It's like a warm hug, perfect for any time of the year but especially fitting for Christmas. The cast is stellar and Jude Law as daddy Mr Napkinhead is so swoonworthy my TV caught fire. Julie A great holiday movie with a fantastic cast and storyline. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 12/07/23 Full Review Jesse H This was a waste of time and not entertaining in the least. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 11/19/24 Full Review Christine C I saw it in the theatre when it came out originally and it seemed just ok in 2006, since it wasnt different from the other movies then. Now in 2024, it is great! I loved the characters and even though the plot is a bit predictable, I just love watching it play out. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/16/24 Full Review Lorna C One of my favorite movies. Great writing. Wonderful casting. Terrific chemistry. Gorgeous cinematography, and a luscious score. It has everything! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/14/24 Full Review judy b One of my all time favorite romantic comedies, actually more romantic than a comedy! It has an unexpected twist that is quite touching. It made me total fan of Jude Law. Am currently watching it for at least the third time! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/13/24 Full Review Jace E The Holiday is a top tier "chick flick". The four leads in this movie are perfectly cast. Also, they all have the perfect names: Iris, Amanda, Graham and Miles. It might sound stupid, but I think their names add to the story. The setting in England is charming and the house in LA is exciting. The dynamic between the two couples is brilliantly executed. As a movie guy, I loved everything with Iris and Miles. As a father, I loved everything with Graham's daughters. The film is full of clichés (like Cameron Diaz running endlessly at the end), but they all work. The entire scene when Arthur is being recognized for his career is fantastic. Everything in that scene makes me smile: "Arthur's Theme" playing, the kiss, the fist pump and smile, every subtle gesture. On top of it all, the score by Hans Zimmer is an underrated gem. I couldn't stop watching it, even after my wife fell asleep. The Holiday is a comfort film at its finest. Best Character: Miles Best Quote: "Iris, if you were a melody... I used only the good notes." - Miles Best Scene: In Miles' Studio Best Piece of Score: "Maestro" Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/16/24 Full Review Read all reviews
