Critics Consensus

A clone of THX 1183, Coma, and Logan's Run, The Island is another loud and bombastic Michael Bay movie where explosions and chases matter more than characters, dialogue, or plot.

Like its slack-jawed clones, The Island is full of energy and incredibly pretty but burdened with only the minimum of smarts. Go to Full Review

As usual, Bay stages the action at a breakneck pace that's never frenetic enough to obscure his film's plot holes and logical lapses. Go to Full Review

Paul S 10h This movie is absolutely incredible! Michael Bay once again proves that he is the master of portraying heart-stopping action sequences. The story was wildly compelling, and the concept of the movie is one of the most intriguing I've ever seen. I definitely recommend it for action and sci-fi fans! See more Bill W 15h This movie is great. I don't know why the low scores. See more Andrew E. @android-LFP 3d Jaw droppingly stupid. See more Ira D 6d This movie is thrilling and action packed I can’t believe I’ve never seen or heard of it until now! Great watch! See more Michael B. @MichaelCBryan 6d I don’t get the hate for this movie. I think it’s a blast. The execution is fantastic. Michael Bay directa like no one else. Pretty amazing action and the core theme is solid. See more TheMovieSearch R @TheMovieSearch 6d Michael Bay’s The Island arrives with an intriguing premise and a strong leading duo, yet the film never fully commits to the bold sci-fi potential that its opening act promises. Even with Scarlett Johansson and Ewan McGregor anchoring the narrative, the movie struggles to find its footing tonally, drifting between thoughtful futuristic exploration and standard action spectacle without fully excelling at either. The result is a film that offers moments of genuine engagement but ultimately settles into an experience that feels more passable than powerful. Johansson delivers a confident performance, giving her character a sense of innocence blended with curiosity, while McGregor brings emotional weight and charm to a role that could have easily become flat under weaker hands. The chemistry between the two creates some of the film’s strongest moments, grounding the high-concept plot in human emotion. Still, despite their efforts, the screenplay doesn’t rise to meet what they’re offering. The narrative often gets caught in awkward transitions, with scenes that feel disconnected from one another and dialogue that drifts into stilted territory. The script’s biggest flaw is that it feels uncertain about what story it wants to tell. At times it gestures toward deeper themes—identity, freedom, corporate corruption—but it rarely explores them with enough depth to spark meaningful reflection. Instead, the film repeatedly pulls back into safer, more predictable action beats, losing the emotional and philosophical tension that could have made it truly memorable. These shifts create a viewing experience that feels inconsistent, leaving the audience unsure of the film’s priorities. As for Bay’s direction, the inconsistency is even more apparent. Some sequences—particularly the large-scale chase scenes—are shot with the kind of precision and energy that remind you why he’s known for blockbuster filmmaking. These moments are intense, visually striking, and fully committed to spectacle. But just as often, the direction feels rushed or disengaged, as if the film is oscillating between bursts of ambition and stretches of disinterest. That uneven commitment results in a movie that can’t maintain momentum for long. There are glimpses throughout the story where you can tell the film could have been something more. When Bay focuses on tension, mystery, or character-driven emotion, the scenes spark with potential. But those sparks rarely ignite into anything sustained, because the film returns so quickly to playing it safe. Instead of embracing the darker, more challenging edges of the concept, it leans into familiar rhythms, undermining the world-building and character arcs that could have elevated the experience. In the end, The Island is an "almost" film—almost engaging, almost ambitious, almost memorable. It’s not terrible by any means, and its strongest moments make it worth a single viewing, especially for fans of the cast. But it never becomes the thrilling, intellectually gripping piece it strives to be. This is one of those films you watch once, appreciate for its potential, and then move on from without feeling compelled to revisit. See more Read all reviews
