David Parkinson Empire Magazine Stunning to look at and ambitious in its symbolic rendering of the subject. Rated: 3/5 Feb 5, 2010 Full Review Time Out A contemplative fable, not without its wry wit, which effectively ponders the workings of faith, specifically the connection between gnawing guilt and a desire to do good. Rated: 3/5 Feb 5, 2010 Full Review Times (UK) An unsentimental journey of guilt, atonement and redemption, with moments of comic bleakness. Your eyes will be smarting. Rated: 4/5 Feb 5, 2010 Full Review Sky Staff Sky Cinema It's very easy to become weary with the ever-remorseful Anatoly, despite his mischievous sense of humour, and you find yourself yearning to cuff him about the ear and telling him to get over it. Rated: 2/5 Feb 5, 2010 Full Review Trevor Johnston Radio Times Overall, the story's just a bit too neat to carry the portentous weight that the film-maker seems to be willing into the material. Rated: 3/5 Feb 5, 2010 Full Review Kim Voynar Cinematical Longuine pulls all these elements together into a deeply moving exploration of sin, redemption, and faith. Oliver G Great movie you will have to be eastern orthodox or to know lots about eastern orthodoxy to understand certain things about it though Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/29/24 Full Review Michael J Beautiful and deep. And free from any political indoctrination. Just honest, heartfelt and profound topics. Highly recommended. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/30/23 Full Review Audience Member This has captured the very essence of Eastern Orthodox Christianity, it is a film of tremendous depth and spiritual value. From what I read, the actor playing father Anatoly is a monk himself, which I found interesting. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/14/23 Full Review Audience Member I hate foreign films but was obligated to watch this movie by friends who allowed me to spend the night when I was in need. So I watched, internally reluctantly. From the beginning, I was riveted. This movie is powerful. But much more than that, this movie is true, heartfelt, and speaks to the spiritual struggle in everyman. I was deeply moved, and grateful for having been made to watch it. Incidentally, after seeing it I wanted to buy it, and when I looked for it I realized that I already had been given the movie many years ago, but never watched it because I don't like foreign films! For anyone with an open heart, this movie is a must see, for your soul's sake. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/16/23 Full Review Audience Member This flick has been on my "want to see"-list for ten years or so, and I finally got to se it. In a small Russian Orthodox monastery lives an unusual man. Some believe he's crazy, other believes he can heal or rip demons out of you. He lives on, and never leaves the small island, where few people live and even less enter. He got there when he was young and had to deal with a very hard choice during the war when the Germans forced him to kill a man. He can't deal with it and just don't have the energy to return to the normal world. Pretty artsy, sometimes funny but also pretty religious and driven by dialogue. The speaking part is not the big thing here, but the visual stuff surely is. The pictures and the camera work is amazing and so are the performances. It reminds me of plenty of other Russian gems but this is not as shiny as I could have hoped for. It's still a very good film but I guess my mind never got really into it - something that happens often these days. 7.5 out of 10 wheelbarrows of coal. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/17/23 Full Review Audience Member Very inspiring movie and well made. The actors did a superb job playing the characters. Will rewatch the film for its deeper spiritual content. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/15/23 Full Review Read all reviews
