Phil Hoad Guardian Writer-director Colin Krawchuk saddles us with a poorly written, lead-footed plot delivered in stodgy lumps between killings. Rated: 2/5 Nov 7, 2023 Full Review Miguel Calabria EscribiendoCine An interesting character totally squandered and wasted, surrounded by mediocrity and a dearth of good decisions. [Full review in Spanish] Rated: 4/10 Mar 1, 2024 Full Review Milagros Amondaray La Nación (Argentina) While it attempts to explore a relationship that strengthens amid panic, The Jester is a superfluous record of a figure who, far from frightening, is a lackluster copy of infinitely superior characters of the genre. [Full review in Spanish] Rated: 2/5 Feb 28, 2024 Full Review Edward Porter Sunday Times (UK) This American horror film has arrived in Britain too late for Halloween this year, and I’m not sure its bogeyman will be well enough remembered to inspire many costumes next October. Rated: 2/5 Nov 13, 2023 Full Review Martin Unsworth Starburst Like Art the Clown, the Jester is a great, simple concoction that is creepy enough to enter the imagination of fans. Rated: 3/5 Nov 6, 2023 Full Review Alan French Sunshine State Cineplex With nearly a decade of shorts in the book, The Jester finally gets a showcase. The result is a mixed bag. It showcases Krawchuk’s talent as a visual storyteller but stumbles with disconnected kills. Rated: 6/10 Oct 6, 2023 Full Review Read all reviews

Jerod S Two estranged sisters have to reconcile family history to get rid of the Jester. The special effects are lame - and the jester could've been scary. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 10/24/25 Full Review TheMovieSearch R The film The Jester initially presents itself as a promising entry in the horror genre, and for a brief moment, it feels like it could deliver something memorable. The character design and development of the Jester are undeniably the strongest aspects of the film. From his eerie movements to the carefully crafted visual details, there’s a sense of menace and unpredictability that could genuinely scare viewers. The balance of supernatural elements is subtle enough to make the fear feel grounded—he’s not a ghost spouting cheap jump scares, but a presence that could creep into your mind long after the film ends. The concept alone has serious potential, offering a villain that could become iconic with the right narrative and support. However, the promise of the Jester as a horror figure is utterly undermined by a screenplay that feels chaotic, illogical, and completely underdeveloped. The story never finds a rhythm; it stumbles from one scene to the next without establishing stakes, building tension, or making sense of its own supernatural rules. Some plot elements are so absurd that they pull you out of the story entirely, making it difficult to engage with the film even for a single coherent scene. It’s clear that whoever wrote the script had interesting ideas, but they lacked the discipline or vision to craft a story that could fully leverage the Jester’s potential. The performances are another major stumbling block. The acting across the board is lifeless, making it impossible to invest in any of the human characters. The father character is particularly painful to watch—flat, unconvincing, and utterly devoid of emotion. The group of friends fare no better, delivering lines that feel forced and devoid of chemistry. It’s baffling how these roles were cast, as the actors simply do not have the presence or skill to bring their characters to life. Every time the Jester isn’t on screen, the movie collapses under the weight of these uninspired performances. Even with these issues, the Jester character himself is fascinating. There’s a magnetic quality to him that keeps you watching, despite everything else failing. His design, physicality, and potential for psychological terror are what make the movie bearable at all. The film feels like a tease of what could have been—a glimpse at a truly terrifying villain trapped in a story that doesn’t know how to use him. Ultimately, The Jester is a frustrating experience: a film that could have been an unforgettable horror story is instead a chaotic mix of squandered ideas and poor execution. The villain’s brilliance shines like a diamond in the rough, but the surrounding screenplay, acting, and narrative choices pull everything down. The Jester himself is terrifying and compelling, but the film around him fails to rise to the occasion, leaving viewers with a powerful character wasted in an otherwise unwatchable story. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 10/17/25 Full Review Michael J Woof. Once again, I feel like I watched a movie where no one involved has ever actually had an interaction with another human being. To call the characters two-dimensional would be insulting the emotional depth of cartoons like Care Bears or Popeye the Sailor Man. The acting was strenuous, the writing atrocious, the practical effects lazy (see the very apparent hangman’s rig in scene 1), and the overarching “theme” was square-peg-round-holed in a way that felt borderline offensive. Can’t wait to watch Jester 2! Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 10/10/25 Full Review Shay Was confused for majority of the movie had some good parts otherwise but could’ve used more context. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 09/18/25 Full Review honestly M. Other than the very nice practical effects… whoa. Not good. Needed more kills- kills were the best part but they take up 10 minutes of the movie altogether. Needed 95% less drama. Also, it could have used acting. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 09/08/25 Full Review Melissa L I thought this was a pretty good horror movie with a good plot and a happy ending. I can't wait to see "The Jester 2".
