      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

The Jesus Rolls limply into the gutter in its misguided attempt to belatedly explore the saga of a supporting character better left on the margins.

D E I wanted to like it but it was just so bad. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 04/07/24 Full Review John A John Turturro, Bobby Cannavale, Christopher Walken for 15 seconds (he was smart). Audrey Tautou and a cast of others you will recognize in this Completely forgettable Stink Bomb! So much potential with this wacky character John Turturro created, what happened? Worst written waste of time I have seen in recent times. Terrible simply isn't enough. .005 out of 100.👎💩 Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 03/23/24 Full Review Ronnie E The Character Jesus Q as introduced in "The Big Lebowski" was very funny and you immediately wanted to explore this character's world in a sequel to the original film. The problem is that there is no tie in that helps develop the plot. The opening scene suggests that Jesus would resume his career as a bowler and we would see him climb to the top of professional bowling after his stretch in prison. But the entire plot of the story was just as satisfying as the character Marie's sex life. A lot of build up and no pay off. The humor was accidental at best and the story went nowhere, literally, as the ending suggests. The actors were not the problem with this project. The performance was adequate but the script was a mess. I believe that in the end if the writer and director would have come together and taken a little more time to THINK about the journey that they wanted their characters to explore that this film could have been amazing. Maybe a reboot could save a great title and maybe next time get Jeff Bridges and John Goodman to make a cameo appearance. Maybe at the bowling alley, it couldn't hurt. Just keep firing those "Big Lebowski" references until something goes "Click". Rated 1 out of 5 stars 03/18/24 Full Review Bryan B As others have said this would have been better without trying to tie it to the big lebowski. They tossed in lines from it but never established the dude ( or Jesus)vibe. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 03/11/24 Full Review K B I love this movie! Have an open mind. It's got nothing to do with Lebowski and it's a very quirky fun movie Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/07/24 Full Review David D Horrible sequel. Other than the character himself there is no connection to Lebowski. It is called Jesus Rolls but there are no bowling scenes. Who thought this was a good idea? Nick De Semlyen Empire Magazine Fair play to Turturro for going in such a strange direction, and assembling a pretty killer cast, but it's unlikely to satisfy even the most ardent Quintana enthusiast. Rated: 2/5 Apr 6, 2020 Full Review Mike McCahill Guardian Choppiness is the real issue. There are baffling shunts from town to country, while the middle stretch tosses up scenes with no real function or punchline. Rated: 2/5 Mar 23, 2020 Full Review Clarisse Loughrey Independent (UK) No amount of added context can override the feeling that the Jesus was never meant to be more than a one-joke character. Rated: 2/5 Mar 22, 2020 Full Review Paul M. Bradshaw NME (New Musical Express) Ill-advised sequel has no idea what it is, why it exists or who it's for. Rated: 2/5 Apr 23, 2021 Full Review Richard Crouse Richard Crouse It'll take more than a few White Russians to wash The Jesus Rolls down. Rated: 1.5/5 Jan 30, 2021 Full Review Daniel Barnes Dare Daniel Tonal atrocities abound in this pointless amalgam of a Big Lebowski side-quel and an age-inappropriate remake of the 1974 French film Going Places. The cameo-filled The Jesus Rolls fails both of its sources, yet also manages to fail on its own terms. Rated: 1/5 Jan 19, 2021 Full Review Read all reviews
