Audience Member Detroit's well-earned status as a revolutionary hotbed for leading-edge music genres is arguably uncontested, and largely understood by even passive music fans. Yet the economic decimation of America's once-leading industrial town at the hands of the 2008 recession has now given full rise to newer communities of industry expanding well beyond its previous pillars of manufacturing and music. Filmmaking is just one of those ascending vehicles, and "The Jitterbugs: Pioneers of Jit" provides a tack-sharp example of documentary filmmaking at its best in this modern but history-driven storytelling piece detailing the Detroit-born dance known as The Jit. There's clear love, reverence, and a sharply felt sense of responsibility to the subject matter radiating throughout this film, and reflected in the creative team's meticulous attention to the elements of craft. They clearly wanted to get this right. Vintage footage from The Jit's era of origin is intercut with compelling modern-day interviews and key Detroit landmarks, and it makes for a thoroughly engrossing historical document. Kudos to the film's visionaries for prioritizing the preservation of a central hub in this great city's cultural legacy. "The Jitterbugs: Pioneers of Jit" is a must-see for anyone of any town drawn to the origins and landmarks of indigenous big city culture. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/18/23 Full Review Audience Member I'm a fan of all types of documentaries, so I was excited to watch the new indie dance documentary, The Jitterbugs: Pioneers of Jit. The film follows the history and evolution of the jit -- the popular dance that originated years ago in the city of Detroit. The doc combines modern day interviews and footage with older footage during the early days of the jit. The doc matched the energy of the dance itself and breezed by with a runtime under an hour. I enjoyed the film without knowing much about the jit prior to the film and I would bet that anyone who appreciates dance or has ties to Detroit will particularly love the film as well. Check it out!
