Cork B Kattan mopes through this thing for 3/4 of the movie, and by the time the inevitable redemption arc comes, it is way too late for me to care. And he looks like Chris Kattan from that Mango sketch. Film is well acted, and there are some cute, laugh out loud scenes in the second half of the movie, but too late to save this. Judd Apatow returns to directing with this semi biographical film based around lead star Pete Davidson's life. The King Of Staten Island is a dramedy that follows the life of Scott and the struggles he goes through to recover from his dark life. Though Apatow's biggest hits in his career were his films that were leaning towards comedy (The 40 Year Old Virgin and Knocked Up), I always liked his films that were mixtures of drama and comedy. This movie happens to be his best work in a decade (and his best movie since the highly underrated film Funny People). The King Of Staten Island is a great character study film. Like the movies of James L. Brooks, Apatow likes to follow his characters around to show them in a naturalistic way. The movie goes at a slow burn pace but it works to its advantage. The performances are great. Pete Davidson, whom I thought is kind of a hit or miss comedian, does a great job with his role in this film. Since its based around experiences in his life, it doesn't feel like he is acting, rather, it feels like he's reliving moments from his life. Marisa Tomei is awesome as usual as the single mother trying to get by in life tackling raising her children and restart her love life. Bill Burr is also great as well as the man who begins dating Tomei's character and tries to be a father figure type for Pete's character. A good watch and one of the better films of this year so far.
