The sombre mood may confound viewers expecting laughs from this director and cast, but amongst the clash of generations and values, Chan’s film captures Hong Kong’s unique funeral culture in all its ritualistic pageantry. Go to Full Review

...[The Last Dance] is at its most potent as a high drama that throws a radical challenge at patriarchy and makes a case for gender equality and empowerment in the fittingly fiery finale. Go to Full Review

...an interesting look at antiquated old-world customs and the rigidity of misogynistic men who refuse to allow themselves to look at these rituals in a more modern manner. The film is sometimes silly but quite poignant... Go to Full Review

Packed with witty moments, it's a knowing tug of war between modern ideas and time-honoured traditions. Filmmaker Anselm Chan also takes a remarkably astute look at the importance of remaining curious and sensitive to the people around us. Go to Full Review

Mark C Sep 27 Given the synopsis, I did not give this movie much of a chance to start. Boy was I wrong. A grounded script and fantastic acting across the board made this a very worthwhile film about many different layers of family relationships and the funeral custom in Hong Kong. Dayo and Michael shine here. So did Tommy Chu. I weeped like a dog by the end of the movie. A real gem. I watched the extended cut as my first viewing and after comparing to the original version, I would definitely recommend the extended cut. See more Alpaca P Aug 18 Super powerful!!! The messages and the culture background.... super spot-on! Since it did not elaborate deeper in the movie, some audience might feel lost or didn't quite get it. The actors did phenomenal job in delivering the plot! Bravo!! 👏👏👏👏👏 See more vivi w Aug 18 The Last Dance offers a rare glimpse into the taboo yet little-known world of funeral planning. It weaves in family drama and questions of legacy, but above all it serves as a powerful record of a culture on the verge of disappearing. See more MB C @MB.Cinema Jun 23 The Last Dance is a gentle, heartfelt drama that finds surprising warmth in the world of funerals. When a broke middle-aged man partners with a stoic Taoist priest to run a funeral business, their professional arrangement slowly evolves into a journey of personal growth and spiritual reconciliation. The film balances light comedy with emotional depth, supported by a wise, well-structured screenplay and quietly powerful performances. Without melodrama, it reflects on family, loss, tradition, and redemption—reminding us that saying goodbye can also be a way to rediscover life..... See more Max W Jun 22 A film about heritage, death, and breaking through hell — one that says much, and leaves even more unsaid. Break Hell invites countless interpretations, leaving viewers with questions that linger long after the credits roll. See more Gareth D Apr 19 A bit over-rated IMHO, extremely predictable, like it's telling you clearly, in advance, telecasting exactly what's going to happen when (could tell exactly what was going to Lin and when the call was going to happen), same for Man and so on. Who was the woman in the mortuary who was so upset she couldn't see the deceased? Not much backstory on the characters. Cheesy and slow in parts. It was reasonably enjoyable, but certainly no masterpiece. See more Read all reviews
