Grant M Very bleak movie but extremely well acted. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/10/22 Full Review isla s This is quite a grim watch, due to the plot of course. Its certainly an atmospheric watch, with suitably spooky sounding music played in the background. The main theme, I reckon, is isolation - more specifically rural isolation - that, trust and secrets. Its a somewhat thoughtful watch but it was a bit grim for mea nd the plot pace is relatively slow. Its not bad as a character focussed drama though. As a British indie film, I would recommend this, yes. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Wonderfully composed film. A family drama set in the English countryside. Amazing. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/28/19 Full Review Audience Member Excellent. The acting was exceptional. I can see why audiences gave it a low rating, it's very low-key, but I was completely gripped by it. It was a brilliant description of how families slowly distance themselves from each other. The layers of emotion and the characters were developed with subtlety and skill. David Parkinson Empire Magazine Unflinching in its depiction of rural reality, this may be a dour drama, but it has been made with sincerity and an exceptional sense of place. Rated: 3/5 May 15, 2017 Full Review Mark Kermode Observer (UK) It may sound bleak, but there is such life and compassion in every frame that the film's tune turns to a song of love. Rated: 5/5 May 14, 2017 Full Review Charlotte O'Sullivan London Evening Standard EU rules. Insurance scams. Infectious diseases. These are all serious topics, yet it's when Leach fools around that The Levelling feels like it has something truly important to say. Rated: 3/5 May 12, 2017 Full Review Rachel Brook One Room With A View Always emotionally volatile yet never histrionic, The Levelling is an impressive directorial debut written, directed and acted with poise and a commitment to authenticity. The film seems an ideal union of creator, material and star. Rated: 4/5 Mar 4, 2019 Full Review Alexa Dalby Dog and Wolf The surrounding landscape is flat, sodden, muddy and overcast and somehow menacing, and the drama is correspondingly low key...Country life is treated with respect in the film. Rated: 3/5 Nov 17, 2018 Full Review PJ Nabarro Patrick Nabarro It shouldn't go unnoticed just how accomplished an achievement it is for its debut director Hope Dickson Leach in pulling off such a tricky pictorial and dramatic scenario.
