David Stratton At the Movies (Australia) After a while it all becomes a bit predictable, especially as the political motivations are, to the uninitiated, more than slightly opaque. Rated: 3.5/5 Apr 27, 2011 Full Review Paul Byrnes Sydney Morning Herald Problems of scale limit the film's clarity and its emotional power. Rated: 3/5 Apr 27, 2011 Full Review Simon Weaving Screenwize An epic historical martial arts film with thin characters, a tepid love story and some excellent fight sequences with the long-handled crescent-moon blade. Rated: 3/5 May 5, 2011 Full Review Margaret Pomeranz At the Movies (Australia) There's something really robust about actually seeing a fight rather than the cutaways and the illusion of a fight rather than a real fight. Rated: 3/5 Apr 28, 2011 Full Review Peter Galvin sbs.com.au The Lost Bladesman starts off big and rather cool and ends up an intimate epic hot and heavy with spent passions and an aura of sadness that's unexpectedly moving. Rated: 3/5 Apr 28, 2011 Full Review Jarrod Walker FILMINK (Australia) While the action is impressive, the human drama and characterisation of the potentially fascinating warrior General Guan Yu is sadly one-dimensional. StephenPaul C The greatest 01 hour: and 47 minutes ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/05/23 Full Review Liam D A interesting piece of history This drama is a good movie and one of Donnie Yen's underrated movies in his filmography Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/12/22 Full Review Audience Member The fight sequences are very good. And, as long as you have the ability to fast forward, the movie is watchable. Unless you have some knowledge of Chinese history, r have seen other historical epics, the plot makes very little sense. Even with such knowledge, they plot only loosely follows relevant historical people and events, and edits it together in a very disorienting and jumbled manner. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/24/23 Full Review Audience Member I really like Donnie Yen, but this was a really bad movie. Having said that, I thought the Cao Cao character was interesting. Sadly, this is one of those horrible "martial arts" movies where the hero fends off half the known universe, then the other half, and then an extra half---all while he has been poisoned. It's just so absurd that it transcends symbolism into total ridiculousness. Wave upon wave upon wave---every able bodied young man in China---attack this guy. They can't even shoot him, at a distance, with arrows flying right and left. It's just boring. Get a life, Donnie. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/19/23 Full Review Audience Member Apart from action sequences scene after scene, it's all dull, not to start with its re-defining certain intrinsical images of historical figures- Cao Cao, the most. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/04/23 Full Review Audience Member I do wish the story itself is better Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/15/23 Full Review Read all reviews
