sean l In his final short comedy before graduating into feature-lengths, Buster Keaton treads some very familiar territory. Broken-hearted over a nixed romance (a frequent motif), he sets sail in a small, private boat (as in 1921's The Boat), falls under the gaze of a mean-spirited boss (big Joe Roberts, who played an identical role in The Blacksmith) and stumbles from one mishap to the next before, finally, realizing it was all a dream (another common story device, used in Convict 13 and The Haunted House, among others). It's not Keaton's wildest ride, nor his most memorable, but it does offer an interesting juxtaposition between where he's been and where he's going. The laughs flow less freely, but they're better-constructed and wittier. The story has more focus and emphasis than the bare-bones scaffolds of a few years prior. He's developing as a writer and as a filmmaker, preparing for the amplified demands of a larger format while also straining to understand how his humor scales to that grand canvas. A transitional work, not an essential one. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member another silent comedic masterpiece from Keaton Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member The Love Nest in question is a whaling ship, on which a heartbroken Buster Keaton gets up to plenty of hijinks. It's not a classic silent film by any means, but there are enough funny and inventive visual jokes to make this short worth a look. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/04/23 Full Review Audience Member Not up to Keaton`s standards, but decent. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/15/23 Full Review Audience Member Buster's final two-reeler, a precursor of sort to "The Navigator", or a continuation of "The Boat", with our man mining the high seas for more and more laughs. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/01/23 Full Review Audience Member Not the best of Keaton's movies, but funny enough. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/22/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating
