What to Know

Critics Consensus

Cruelly clever with some unforgettably gory set pieces, The Monkey reaffirms director Osgood Perkins' horror bona fides while revealing he also has a surprising -- albeit sick -- sense of humor.

Audience Says

More fun than a barrel of horror, The Monkey still delivers the gore it promises through a predictable and somewhat enjoyable story.

Sergio Burstein Los Angeles Times Perkins consciously assumes the sense of chaos to shape a story that, by unexpectedly combining the 'indie' sensibility with that of the bloodiest 'blockbuster', offers results as uneven as they are striking. [Full review in Spanish] Mar 11, 2025 Full Review Zachary Lee Chicago Reader If you’re willing to dig past The Monkey’s blood and guts, you’ll find a thoughtful inquiry into the very different lives of people depending on their response and disposition toward the random, inordinate, and callous suffering around us. Mar 4, 2025 Full Review Donald Clarke Irish Times The film, shot in oily gloom by Nico Aguilar, sets out to dispatch every passerby in fashions that would appal Caligula. Good old-fashioned disgusting fun. I had a blast. Rated: 4/5 Feb 28, 2025 Full Review Eileen Jones The Jacobin It’s quite inventive and open-ended. Mar 25, 2025 Full Review Rubén Rosario MiamiArtZine Yes, this “Monkey” is a one-trick pony, but the trick never gets old. Mar 24, 2025 Full Review Nicholas Bell Fish Jelly Films (YouTube) Perkins seems more interested in formulating a mirage of monkey shines in this tonally uneven take on a noted Stephen King short story which manages only to succeed in overwhelming not one but two vacuous characterizations played by Theo James.. SamWell Movie was better than expected. Tad bit corny but funny while doing it. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/25/25 Full Review poorly written but shiny The movie has good special effects and some pretty cool looking scenes, but it feels like the dialogue and plot was written by a 12-year-old. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/24/25 Full Review J Dawg. Overall I liked it. But it surprised me. Meaning i didn't expect it to be the kind of movie that it was. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/24/25 Full Review Jen M It was ok. Definitely was a bit bland. Could have been scarier and funnier. They added some of Kings touches but still it didn’t deliver for me. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/24/25 Full Review Maria Watch it with my man. It was creepy yet kind of funny. We liked it! ❤️ Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/24/25 Full Review Rolando Too cheesy not a scary movie. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/23/25 Full Review Read all reviews
