What to Know

Critics Consensus

Cruelly clever with some unforgettably gory set pieces, The Monkey reaffirms director Osgood Perkins' horror bona fides while revealing he also has a surprising -- albeit sick -- sense of humor.

Audience Says

More fun than a barrel of horror, The Monkey still delivers the gore it promises through a predictable and somewhat enjoyable story.

Sergio Burstein Los Angeles Times Perkins consciously assumes the sense of chaos to shape a story that, by unexpectedly combining the 'indie' sensibility with that of the bloodiest 'blockbuster', offers results as uneven as they are striking. [Full review in Spanish] Mar 11, 2025 Full Review Zachary Lee Chicago Reader If you’re willing to dig past The Monkey’s blood and guts, you’ll find a thoughtful inquiry into the very different lives of people depending on their response and disposition toward the random, inordinate, and callous suffering around us. Mar 4, 2025 Full Review Donald Clarke Irish Times The film, shot in oily gloom by Nico Aguilar, sets out to dispatch every passerby in fashions that would appal Caligula. Good old-fashioned disgusting fun. I had a blast. Rated: 4/5 Feb 28, 2025 Full Review Guillermo Troncoso Screen Realm An amusing, blood-soaked horror comedy that doesn’t take itself too seriously, although some uneven pacing and a lack of sustained tension do hold it back somewhat. Rated: 3.5/5 Jul 29, 2025 Full Review Rebecca Sayce FILMHOUNDS Magazine Perkins' latest offering is a fun splatter-fest that highlights that sometimes, the best way to deal with death is to laugh – and laugh lots. Rated: 3/5 Jul 23, 2025 Full Review John Daniel Tangalin The Cinema Spot The Monkey is a blessing in disguise in how it permits its lead characters, Hal and Bill Shelburn (Christian Convery, Theo James), to approach Death as a metaphysics of life, namely one that we, as humans, have at least some control over. taylor it was fun. it was weird. it was something worth going into knowing very little.. alla I new is that it's a short story by Stephen King. lol Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/26/25 Full Review Juan The humor makes the deaths easy to digest, somewhat. But the humor makes me think that everyone doesn’t care for people like they should, so that threw me off. Like, if someone they don’t care too much about dies, it’s not that big a deal, but if it’s a loved one, then scary. It’s not a bad movie, it’s very entertaining. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/18/25 Full Review Joseph Q Gory. Fun. Horror filled. Everything you would expect from a Stephen King film Rated 3 out of 5 stars 06/27/25 Full Review Juandi I was so excited for this film based off its trailer. The first half of the film sets up a promising, thrilling ride only for it to end up being a predictable plot twist. It’s almost like the end was an after thought that had to be rushed in order to meet a certain deadline. Disappointing. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 06/06/25 Full Review Ryan M I. He led my watch a lot. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 06/06/25 Full Review Jayland The story line was interesting. A lot of twist and turns. Enjoyably Funny. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/23/25 Full Review Read all reviews
