Critics Consensus

Cruelly clever with some unforgettably gory set pieces, The Monkey reaffirms director Osgood Perkins' horror bona fides while revealing he also has a surprising -- albeit sick -- sense of humor.

Donald Clarke Irish Times The film, shot in oily gloom by Nico Aguilar, sets out to dispatch every passerby in fashions that would appal Caligula. Good old-fashioned disgusting fun. I had a blast. Rated: 4/5 Feb 28, 2025 Full Review Mark Kermode Kermode and Mayo's Take (YouTube) This is a riot of a film and I pretty much enjoyed every moment of it. Feb 26, 2025 Full Review Tim Robey Daily Telegraph (UK) Perkins’s film never explains how the monkey migrates so much, but follows it from pillar to post on an equal-opportunity killing spree. As spectacle, it’s garish. Rated: 2/5 Feb 25, 2025 Full Review Ilan Preskovsky Channel24 (South Africa) The Monkey is not a horror movie. I don’t believe for a second that any of it is supposed to be even remotely scary. [It's] an utterly deranged, absurdist existential-comedy with a very sick and twisted sense of humour. And I loved every minute of it. Rated: 4/5 Mar 2, 2025 Full Review Ally Ham The Review Geek Zaniness seems to be employed as a deliberate cover for the laziness of this poorly-written, ill-conceived horror adaptation. Rated: 3/10 Mar 1, 2025 Full Review Nadine Whitney The Curb The Monkey isn’t deep, it’s high camp with an extreme body count pushing the envelope of horror-comedy to its natural conclusion. Supernatural snuff spectacle has rarely been so much fun. Mar 1, 2025 Full Review Read all reviews

Micheal It was so much gore. I enjoyed it. But it seemed unnecessarily gory. But also this seemed to be the point. I enjoyed the dead pan humor. I honestly would watch it again. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/03/25 Full Review Richard A Normally not a fan of Steven King. However the interjection of so much comedy and quick wit into this film was outstanding. Took a dark tale and made it fun to watch. It was paradoxical being both gruesome and hysterical. Well done. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/03/25 Full Review Ana S This movie was perfect for my occasion. My granddaughter 12 loves horror, I truly dont and preferred a comedy or action. This had a little bit of everything. The horror was silly horror that made everyone chuckle. I would save suggest save the theater expense and catch on streaming. Would make for a good watch party with friends that are not offended by dark events. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/03/25 Full Review David R Absolutely awful. Dreadful. Could have been something really good and unique but the casting, script, and entire production is soaked in laziness and cut corners. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 03/03/25 Full Review shae The movie was obvious and not that scary , I fell asleep on it Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/03/25 Full Review Jorge F Nothing crazy. Kinda worth watching it at home but I love the actor (Theo James), so I came out to support. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/03/25 Full Review Read all reviews
