C. W The Monkey Goes West is not a hidden masterpiece. It's a 1966 adaptation of part of the extremely well known Journey to the West novel, which is still made into modern day wuxia movies. Hell the story is about to be released as a big release game called Black Myth: Wukong, so it's not as if I'm not familiar with the core components. The music can be beautiful, but you also have a lot of songs conveying exposition that go on for quite a while. The film feels long because the film repeats, sometimes scene after scene of very similar dialogue that makes it feel tedious. An adventure story with magic, demons, and gods and goddesses should not be boring. I think it's worth checking out if you enjoy old school wuxia. There were plenty of things I liked. The special effects are charming but clearly done with limitations. The make up effects for Monkey and Pig are fun and both characters make this engaging. The Monkey Goes West continues Shaw-tember 2023... not sure what I'll watch next. I don't think it's immediate sequel. Something a bit more exciting.
