Critics Consensus

An effective pairing of period setting and timeless themes, The Nest wrings additional tension out of its unsettling story with an outstanding pair of lead performances.

Guy Lodge Film of the Week I watched The Nest in a fixed state of unease, shoulders tense and set forward even in a plush cinema seat, my mouth immediately drying out after each sip of my drink. Nov 12, 2021 Full Review Linda Marric The Jewish Chronicle There's something commendably old fashioned and decidedly unassuming about The Nest. Durkin's direction is both precise and admirably restrained in its depiction of an era famed for its excesses. Rated: 4/5 Sep 2, 2021 Full Review Wendy Ide Observer (UK) The Nest is a belated cautionary tale - this tainted family is a skeleton in the closet of our current socioeconomic climate. Rated: 4/5 Aug 29, 2021 Full Review Sarah Cortinaz InSession Film The Nest’s slow build-up may leave you craving more, but the fantastic performances from Law and Coon, and Durkin’s brilliant direction, will more than make up for it. Rated: B Apr 23, 2024 Full Review Ryan McQuade InSession Film It’s been almost 10 years since we last saw Sean Durkin bring us a new project, and with this welcomed return, we get a dark look at the American dream... Apr 4, 2024 Full Review M.N. Miller Ready Steady Cut The Nest is perhaps the first COVID-19/quarantine film without meaning to be. Its levels of isolation are deeply felt and highlighted by the lies we tell ourselves or the ones whom we hold most dear. Rated: 3.5/5 Sep 2, 2022 Full Review Read all reviews

Terry T Completely boring! Kept watching with the hope that something was going to happen. The scene with horse was disrespectful toward animals. Just a lot of loose events, nothing tying together to keep the viewer interested. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 07/26/24 Full Review Bedrich P Long (really excessively long) shots that are often dreary and pointless. A scene with a dead horse being dropped from a front end loader. Absolutely no respect for anyone in that scene. Dropped from the raised position? Disgusting. Stopped watching shortly afterwards when we stared at his mother for 10 seconds for "dramatic effect". Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 06/28/24 Full Review Roman B I actually created an account because I was so shocked with the bad user reviews for this film and I wanted to make sure that people that appreciate great cinema give it a chance. This film is a layered and stylish slow burn. A beautiful mirror held up to society and to ourselves that examines the roles we attempt to play at work and in our own homes. It’s beautifully filmed, has an outstanding cast and is definitely worth your time. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/25/24 Full Review Lisa W Once again, this goes to show you that all film critics here are lunatics. This was probably in my top 5 for worst movies ever. It is billed as a thriller, but there was absolutely nothing thrilling about this waste of time. Nothing ever happened, nothing ever tied in, nothing ever resolved itself. I’ll save you the time and tell you don’t bother. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 06/18/24 Full Review Dan G Possibly the worst movie i have had the misfortune to see in the past 5 years. Good acting filmed in mostly dim lighting. With a slow meandering sequencing. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 06/17/24 Full Review David M Absolutely awful. Simply a story of a man who wants everyone think he is big time and rich but he really isn't. He had one great year and pissed all the money away. Proceeded by continuously acquiring debt in hopes he can pay it off and get ahead by recklessly chasing get rich quick pursuits at a heavy cost on his wife and children. . The acting is great, but cant carry the awful writing and editing. The movie ends so abruptly and without definitive conclusion to his marriage and children it feels as if they simply ran out of money creating the picture and just stopped it.
