Critics Consensus

Though The Nines doesn't solidify as well as writer/director John August would hope for, Ryan Reynolds's strong performance makes each of the film's intriguing segments worth watching.

Joshua Rothkopf Time Out Rated: 1/5 Nov 17, 2011 Full Review Charlotte O'Sullivan London Evening Standard Let's avoid such extremes, and note merely that he's made a film that's funny ha-ha as well as funny peculiar; an exercise in navel-gazing that tickles all the senses. Urban Urban Cinefile It defies categorisation, which I love, and defies logic, which is very European. But it's also clever, funny and compelling Oct 4, 2008 Full Review Wesley Lovell Cinema Sight An interesting, if high minded, concept film that is nothing without its performers. Jeffrey P Interesting enough to not be disappointing, but lacking in good sense, rhyme, and reason. Ending felt like a reach and didn’t totally add up, lowered it a notch. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 08/25/24 Full Review Hannah H I can't understand what I just wasted an hour and a half watching Rated 1 out of 5 stars 07/14/24 Full Review Cash S The Nines is a creative and trippy film. I found myself very invested from beginning to end. All of the performances are great in here. This is the first serious role that I've seen Ryan Reynolds in, and he absolutely nailed it. I felt like this film did a pretty good job at handling these existential themes. I do feel like the movie gets a little too trippy for it's own good, and sometimes the quirkiness didn't work for me. The ending is shocking and emotional, but some parts of the film weren't as satisfying as I would've liked. I also felt like there were some pacing issues especially in the beginning. I really liked this film, even if there was some missed potential. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/26/24 Full Review sarah j This one was interesting to see evolve as things are revealed to the audience, taking us on an unexpected journey. Excellent performances from Reynolds and McCarthy, you see why they became such stars. Definitely makes you think, during and after the story is done. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Da fuq??!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/13/23 Full Review Audience Member I loved this film so much when I saw it at the time, I had to find out who the amazing actress was that I knew nothing about...that actress was Melissa McCarthy. I don't think McCarthy has been allowed to shine quite so brightly on screen since, although all the projects I see coming out with her and her husband Ben always sound interesting. She should do a Nutty Professor-type comedy to stretch her chops like she did here, playing many roles in one film. She is extremely talented, and this film really showcases that about her.
