Critics Consensus

Starring a disengaged Jared Leto and stuffed with gangster cliches, The Outsider never distinguishes itself enough to gain admittance into the inner circle of good yakuza pictures.

Take Leto out of the picture and you have an even less noteworthy movie, a yakuza tale with an originality deficit. Go to Full Review

Can a gaijin ever be trusted like family, or will his motives ultimately be self-serving? It's an interesting question in a story that's otherwise completely devoid of interesting questions, but The Outsider is too enamored with its foreign star. Go to Full Review

"The Outsider" is a slick copy of multiple, much-better films and TV series. It's so well-polished it's practically featureless. Go to Full Review

The Outsider is needlessly cruel, dour, and slow. No amount of brooding from a handsome leading man can save it. Go to Full Review

It's hard to fault The Outsider too much though, as it will predictably fall into the black hole that is Netflix original movies, so here's hoping that Zandvliet, Leto, and especially Hjelm move on to better things in the near future. Go to Full Review

The Outsider feels like the first draft of a story that could have worked with more tweaks and energy. It is another case of a project featuring talented people, but never truly exploiting their talents. Go to Full Review

Trentham B @Trentham Dec 8 This is my first time doing a review. I'd kept this film on my list of movies to watch on Netflix for a while now, as the description piqued my interest. I'd been shallow enough to not actually watch it for all this time because of the low rating from critics on here. After watching it tonight, I'm going to stop checking a movies critic rating, or at least not let that influence my watching a film or not. The tone, pace, acting, visuals, dialogue, and story were all very cohesive and made up a great film. There were multiple moments that I could really feel the emotions being presented, especially in the silence in these moments. 5 stars recommend this film, it was a refreshing take on the overly saturated "gangster" genre, props to the team involved in its making. See more tommy J Dec 1 I felt kinda bored, I feel as though jared leto wasnt a good choice, the part he plays seems to be better fitting for a 20 something year old not a 50 year old with botox. Emil hirsch would have been a better selection rather than him playing an unimportant role. The most exciting part of the movie was leto cutting his finger tips off. I could only imagine what it would be like to be to be yakuza an outsider in that organization . This film explores this culture , it’s interesting time period 1950’s Japan See more Zach R Oct 10 A little slow, but a fun and cinematic watch! See more Oran R Sep 4 This is a difficult watch, but captures the worldview and the culture of the Yakuza, excellent acting and cinematography, but a dark brooding bloody story of how a postwar westerner, alienated from his home, manages to insert himself into a culture and a history not his own. The love story is a little difficult to believe or accept, which is why it gets 4 stars, along with the rather incredible ending. As a fan of this genre I loved it and rewatched it many times. Tadanobu Asano is a favourite actor of mine (check him out in the 2003 remake of Zatoichi), of course Leto is always watchable and makes it easier for a Gaijin like myself insert himself imaginatively into this dark and bloody tale. I can completely understand how many don't like it, I loved it. Give it another watch :-) See more Claudio C Jun 2 The Outsider (2018) Another Great Yakuza Movie (11,738 – 02 Jun 2025 – by Claudio Carvalho) In 1954, in Osaka, the former American Captain Nick Lowell (Jared Leto) is prisoner of a Japanese prison. When other inmates hang the Yakuza Kiyoshi (Tadanobu Asano) by the neck in the bathroom, Nick saves him, and they are put in solitary confinement in the same cell. Kiyoshi decides to simulate suicide to go to the hospital and flee from the penitentiary, and asks Nick to call the guards. He also promises that his brothers will release him. Soon Nick is released, and Kiyoshi brings him to his family Shiromatsu. He succeeds in his assignments and falls in love with Kiyoshi’s sister Miyu (Shioli Kutsuna). Nick slowly becomes trustworthy and joins the Shiromatsu’s family, tattooing his body. But the ambitious Seizu family begins a war with the Shiromatsu ambitioning to take their business in Osaka. Yakuza movies in general are very attractive, and “The Outsider” (2018) is no exception. The plot is different from the masterpiece “American Yakuza” (1988), but also tells the story of an American that joins a Yakuza family, falls in love with the sister of his “brother” and fells totally attracted by their brotherhood. Jared Leto has a great performance, and the brutal story is mesmerizing. My vote is eight.
