Johnny Loftus Decider Not everything here works. Some of the shorts feel unfinished, like a quick sketch of a larger idea. But that largely works in the special’s favor, since it lends an unsettling air to the entire thing – you really don’t know what’s coming next. Oct 18, 2022 Full Review Read all reviews

Jacob B Ah yes, my favourite. Halloween specials for nonexistent TV shows. And what we see here, of the Paloni Show scenes that bridge the segments, doesn't really jive as a glorified pilot episode*. In all seriousness though, I liked this special. Even if it is likely doomed to be a one-off thanks to Justin Roiland's...unprofessional behaviour and the revelations that the Rick and Morty fanbase's worship of him is built on lies (hasn't actually written an episode since 2015, has had very little involvement with the IP outside of voicework and hasn't even talked to co-creator Dan Harmon since 2019, and that was just a text message). Just as well that this is an anthology so anybody who struggles with separating art from the artist shouldn't worry too much about guilt weighing down on their conscience. I'll admit, not all of the segments work and some of the humour amounts to "namedropping the pop culture reference in case somebody's out of the loop" but this is still a good October/early November watch for anyone with a Disney+/Hulu subscription. My favourite segments were one called "Bet it was Becca" for its amazing animation that leaves a lasting impact despite its brevity (and if you don't want to watch the rest of the thing, this short can currently be found free-of-charge on YouTube) and the segment focusing on a father fighting against aliens trying to microwave his baby because of the well-choreographed action that shows that "John Wick in claymation" can work, even if you don't have resources like those of Laika *cough* Kubo and the Two Strings *cough*. It was nice in another segment to see Gilbert Gottfried in a posthumous role, even if I have no idea what to make of some of the stylistic choices and the rotoscoped mockumentary was amusing. The live-action segment was funny, if a bit too reliant on profanity for its implementation of the Subverted Kids' Show trope and gotta love the darkly satirical segment about making a business out of cannibalism and the one about a killer astronaut. This anthology is not half-bad! Although the actual Paloni Show scenes can be hit-or-miss, leaning more into typical adult animation tropes like the ones used in other Fox IPs. If this is meant to be Justin Roiland's sense of humour...I've never seen an entire episode of Rick and Morty, just clips so don't bust my balls about something I, to be fair, don't have a high enough IQ to understand. It doesn't help that you're expected to give a damn about these characters we've never seen befo-wait, what's that, IMDb? There was another Paloni thing in 2009? Oh, okay. Doesn't seem like it can be found online though, and nobody at Hulu/Disney+ could be arsed to go look in some archives. Either way, I'm still glad I watched this special and recommend it for any animation fans looking for some more NSFW spooks, that don't resort to transparent Family Guy-style shock value. Hey, if we're lucky, we might get another one of these despite my previous remark about this being a one-off. If Rick and Morty, and the DLC of a game he had a more hands-on role with called High on Life, could continue without Justin Roiland, who's to say that it's outside the realm of possibility for a Paloni Christmas special or something to do the same thing? *Before some smartass points out that the first episode of The Simpsons was a Christmas special, keep in mind that this was because the actual pilot episode was the victim of a troubled production that led to it getting turned into a season finale instead. And this is without taking into account that the Tracey Ullman show shorts preceded "Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire" Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/07/25 Full Review Read all reviews
