Audience Member This is one of the better efforts of Arturo Ripstein, who assisted the great surrealist filmmaker Luis Bunuel. For the first hour or so (the movie is about 20-30 minutes overlong), "The Realm of Fortune" is quite amusing, especially as it deals with the Mexican "sport" of cock fighting, which Ripstein reveals to be fixed in various ways, including the crushing of a cock's rib cage by the bribed official in charge of weighing the birds prior to a match. The humor arises out of anti-clerical sentiments, such as when the protagonist goes to a priest for a few centavos only to be rebuffed by the TV-obsessed priest. Bunuel said that Mexico is the most surreal country in the world, and when you watch this, you see why. The film is redolent of Bunuel's "Nazarin," as it is based in large part on the same theme: no good deed shall go unpunished. I took a star or two off my rating because the film is over two hours and drags in the middle, but it is certainly worth a watch for lovers of Mexico and fans of Bunuel.
