An adaptation of the landmark Chekhov play, this film follows Konstantin (David Warner), an aspiring writer whose unloving mother, Arkadina (Simone Signoret), is involved with haughty novelist Trigorin (James Mason). Trigorin also attracts the attentions of Nina (Vanessa Redgrave), a young woman whom Konstantin has loved from afar. After two years, Arkadina's brother (Harry Andrews) becomes very sick, reuniting everyone and leading Konstantin to make an irrevocable decision about his future.
