Critics Consensus

It doesn't lack for ambition, but The Secret Life of Walter Mitty fails to back up its grand designs with enough substance to anchor the spectacle.

Jason Bailey Flavorwire With such high aims, it's too bad that 'The Secret Life of Walter Mitty' falls somewhat short of greatness. But it's not often that you come across a "big" movie as earnest and patently un-cynical as this one. Jun 19, 2016 Full Review Dana Stevens Slate Stiller's attempt to braid together introspection and humor kept me engaged and curious, even when I wasn't quite sure what he was setting out to do. Jan 1, 2014 Full Review Donald Clarke Irish Times The Secret Life of Walter Mitty probably succeeds on its own terms. Given the elusive nature of those terms, it is, however, hard to tell for certain. Rated: 3/5 Jan 1, 2014 Full Review Emiliano Basile EscribiendoCine While not genial, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty recaptures the charm of hopeful stories by giving a comedy twist... Sep 23, 2022 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Less about Walter Mitty’s secret life than his actual, perfectly romantic, impossibly realized adventures, the film loses itself in a fantasy world all its own and never fully embraces the everyday balance of reality and imagination. Fred H You have to see this movie. It is an enjoyable feel good movie that somehow can inspire you to do more in your life. This movie brought back my affinity to David Bowie’s music and more. This is the movie that you have to ignore critics’ reviews. Many critics make wrong evaluations about movies and sometimes I am okay with that, but this one you have to really ignore critics and see the movie yourself. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/25 Full Review Nay A Just an amazing, fun to watch and an inspiring movie with a good story and good actings. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/27/25 Full Review av 8 Is it far-fetched? Hell, yeah. Is it still enjoyable? Yes. Perhaps if I had watched this when I was younger, all these fantastic elements would have awed me more. The story is decent; the scenery is amazing. Walter Mitty, as portrayed by Ben Stiller, is amiable af. We are all prisoners of our minds, but Mitty's mind is no such confinement, for his daydreaming takes him farther than most have trodden. Assigned to handle the image of the final cover of the magazine he works for, Walter is presented with the opportunity of a lifetime to embark upon an adventure to seek out a missing negative (due to no fault of his own (?)). If you really think about it, the answer is obvious all along. Regardless, it is an entertaining watch. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/25/25 Full Review Raymond P An Introvert's Movie through and through: As an introvert, I always find myself dreaming of big things I want to do. Be it hopping on a plane and going to my dream European vacation without any regard of the fact that I am broke, or of standing up for myself when I find myself being bullied, of just asking my crush out and going on a magical date (which I was able to do and she is now my wife). This movie encapsulates that feeling which makes it relatable to a lot of audiences. I look at reviews for this movie and I see personal takes on it, how it resonates with their own desire to travel the world or go out into the world and experience Life. I get that many would find this confusing at times. I went to this movie because I saw a trailer of it on TV and expected a Ben Stiller typical comedy (which I love). Truth be told, I was caught off guard by how this film looked. The cinematography at the opening scenes told me this isn't going to be a comedy. The music at the title sequence also tells you that his film will hit you emotionally. And then the second act showed me what it was all about. The rest is history. I may be biased but I have watched this movie countless times. I shared this with everyone I have ever met, telling them how this movie inspires. So if you are thinking of watching this, just go do it. If you are an introvert like me, I believe that there is a high chance you'll find a new favorite feel good film. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/19/25 Full Review Audience Member I see a great deal of people criticizing the films logic and the director's thinking behind the story line but, I don't think this is the point - to me as a viewer I greatly enjoyed the comedy twists and at times bizarre circumstances Ben Stiller faced. Viewing each experience as a fun metaphor for life's infinite potential to present bizarre and yet iconic memories. I also thought the film was relatable in the sense it captured well the human desire for greatness - to be more - so well at times the film almost felt inspirational to take my life by the horns. I admit its not perfect but, I think a major point of the film is to create a connection between the protagonist and the viewer by presenting a relatable feeling in a fun way - because I'm certain we've all had a moment we wished we were these great adventurers/pioneers/go-getters.
