[A] reasonably entertaining, imprudently daft aquatic thriller. Go to Full Review

The realism of the early scenes -- leaving aside Nancy's unaccountable willingness to be stranded alone in a remote place -- is replaced by increasingly silly scenes that lead eventually to a nonsensical conclusion. Go to Full Review

About half of what is now going on in all cinema is the product of technological advances in film-making and The Shallows makes much more intelligent use of them than the superheroes do. Go to Full Review

The shock value action is just what you want in this kind of movie and the stings linger like a knife slowly continuing to twist inside a wound. Go to Full Review

“The Shallows” wisely stays true to its central concept. Its hook could easily wear thin if it extended itself too far, but the compact 80 minute running time keeps the tension high and the story moving forward. Go to Full Review

TheMovieSearch R @TheMovieSearch Nov 29 Blake Lively delivers exactly the kind of tightly focused, emotionally grounded performance needed to elevate a survival thriller, and her work in The Shallows is a perfect example of what happens when a genre film takes itself seriously. When this movie first hit theaters, there was a sense of curiosity—another shark movie, another spin on humans battling nature—but The Shallows quickly proved it had far more bite than the standard creature feature. The excitement of that first viewing still feels justified, because the film commits to tension, craft, and character in ways many shark movies never attempt. Shark-centered films have a long history of leaning into the outrageous—over-the-top CGI, implausible scenarios, and tongue-in-cheek exaggeration that can make the experience more comedic than suspenseful. The Shallows avoids all of that. Instead of drowning in digital excess or absurd story beats, it keeps its narrative lean, grounded, and frighteningly plausible. The result is a thriller that honors the standard once set by the genre’s greats, offering something modern audiences rarely get: a shark movie that feels genuinely dangerous rather than unintentionally funny. What makes the film truly work is its intimate battle: one woman versus an apex predator, stripped of gimmicks and melodrama. The screenplay doesn’t spiral into needless detours or secondary plots designed to fill time. It stays locked on Lively’s character, pushing her through escalating waves of terror, injury, and ingenuity without ever breaking the tension. Every encounter with the shark carries weight because the film treats the situation with respect, letting the danger feel visceral and immediate. Lively’s performance anchors that intensity. She embodies fear, resilience, and pain in a way that keeps the audience perched on the edge of their seats, constantly questioning whether her character will survive or if the ocean will claim another victim. Her vulnerability makes the stakes feel deeply personal, and her determination turns the film into a gripping endurance test. Even as the shark becomes the central threat, it’s her emotional journey that drives the film’s momentum. The movie also succeeds in capturing genuine anxiety—sustained, suffocating, and addictive. It’s the kind of thriller you watch with your muscles tensed, your breath held, and your eyes glued to the screen because every moment feels like it could be her last. And what’s rare is how well The Shallows holds up on repeat viewings. Much like the first time, rewatching brings back the same pulse-pounding anticipation, proving just how effectively the film balances pacing, suspense, and storytelling. For many viewers, this remains one of Blake Lively’s strongest performances, showcasing her ability to command a film almost entirely on her own. The woman-versus-nature premise is executed with such intentional simplicity and cinematic precision that the story feels timeless. It’s a rare modern survival thriller that respects both its audience and its genre, and it earns every ounce of admiration it receives. If you haven’t revisited The Shallows in a while—or if you somehow missed it entirely—it’s absolutely worth your time. See more S S. @SShol Oct 31 Among the best shark movies of all time.
