Audience Member Once you accept the terms of this film - that it is driven by myth and aestheticism rather than by narrative - it's really rather wonderful. It seemed to me that most of the critics didn't really get the point. Which kind of makes sense; it is about trusting in inborn feelings rather than received wisdom, after all. Made me think critics can get a bit stuck in generic expectations; how you could miss the beauty of this I don't understand. I don't think it's supposed to be an intellectual experience. The cinematography is mesmerising, the interiors reminded me of paintings by Hammershoi, and the exteriors were all sublime. It's worth watching for that alone. There's also nothing hammy about the acting - I felt as if I was watching a different film from the one I'd read about. Don't be put off. Tara Brady Irish Times Everything about The Silent Storm suggests a screenplay was written entirely IN CAPITAL LETTERS. No "r" goes unrolled, no piece of furniture is unpounded. Rated: 2/5 Aug 9, 2016 Full Review Mark Kermode Observer (UK) Writer-director Corinna McFarlane counterposes Bergmanesque interiors with gaping exteriors, while Alastair Caplin's eerie, evocative score cranks up the searing, brooding mood. Rated: 3/5 May 22, 2016 Full Review Patrick Smith Daily Telegraph (UK) Stultifyingly vapid. Rated: 1/5 May 20, 2016 Full Review Danielle Davenport One Room With A View McFarlane's feature debut overflows with expansive and explosive emotions. An intense picture that does not coddle, The Silent Storm embraces its atmospheric identity, fervent soundtrack and otherworldly environment. Rated: 3/5 Apr 2, 2019 Full Review Neil Smith Total Film [An] overwrought period drama, which doesn't want for notable names but does cry out for a script rejig. Rated: 2/5 Jan 2, 2017 Full Review Paddy Kehoe RTÉ (Ireland) [An] over-wrought melodrama which sinks like a failed flan in the middle. Rated: 1/5 Jul 20, 2016 Full Review Read all reviews
