Audience Member This documentary follows a group of slum children in Mumbai as they prepare to sing songs from The Sound of Music with an orchestra for one night in a concert hall. In particular, the story follows 11 year old Ashish, who gets selected to sing a solo for the performance. The relationship between Ashish and his best friend who also competes for the solo and their comments when Ashish gets it are an interesting reminder of the universality of emotions, even in different socio-economic situations and amongst children. There is a moment where the contrast between the have and have nots are laid bare when slum child Ashish and a private school girl separately talk about their daily life and it was at this point where the stark disparity in life uncomfortably skewers the so far positive ideal of music as an uplifting and soul affirming. It was this juxtaposition that was, for me, the uncomfortable highlight of this documentary. This documentary did start to run out of momentum towards the end, yet while it may not inspire grand acts in its viewers, it was worth watching.
