Tense, smartly written, and wonderfully cast, The Town proves that Ben Affleck has rediscovered his muse -- and that he's a director to be reckoned with.

Deborah Ross The Spectator So this isn't fresh, exactly, but it is tense and exciting and well performed and you do end up caring about the people you've been manipulated into caring about. I ask you: what more could you want from a trip to the cinema? Aug 30, 2018 Full Review Candice Frederick Reel Talk Online The Town is a definite must-see. Rated: A Sep 11, 2017 Full Review Jim Schembri The Age (Australia) As far as a developing directing talent goes, The Town is to Ben Affleck what Pulp Fiction was to Quentin Tarantino. It's that good. Rated: 4/5 Oct 22, 2010 Full Review Patrick Cavanaugh The Wolfman Cometh A surprisingly effective crime thriller that succeeds by leaning into the diversity of the ensemble cast of characters and their perspectives. Rated: 4/5 Sep 11, 2025 Full Review Danilo Castro Next Best Picture It’s a well-executed mashup of set pieces and character dynamics that fail to build on what came before. Which, truth be told, still makes for a pretty entertaining viewing. Rated: 7/10 Jul 25, 2024 Full Review Don Shanahan Every Movie Has a Lesson While it's not as epic and well-acted as "Heat" and nowhere near as visceral as "The Departed," "The Town" can hold it's own in the crime thriller department. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/16/25 Full Review John S I am baffled by all the love for this movie. Affleck is supposedly an ex-hockey player turned bank robber, but acts more like a special forces operative (because it’s cool, I guess, and because Affleck co-wrote and directed). Why are we supposed to root for Affleck, anyway? Because he robs banks with a brutal gang? Because he shoots automatic weapons at cops (who perversely are made to seem like the bad guys)? Because he is so nice to women? His love interest makes no sense, either: she risks death to trigger a silent alarm, but she seems fine with the profits of crime. Huh? The story is absurd from beginning to end, beginning with the kidnapping—which should win some kind of prize as the most ridiculous “meet cute” of all time. The best thing about this film is Blake Lively’s performance, and no, I can’t believe I just wrote that, either. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 11/09/25 Full Review Janet T What’s not to love about this movie! Under skilful direction of Ben Affleck, the excellent cast work their characters masterfully through a gritty, intense, edgy and at times tragic crime thriller. It has an authentic feel to it, easy to be invested in the story and underlying main characters. The action scenes kept me on the edge of my seat….loved it so much I’ve watched it a few times over the years. Prefer Ben Affleck as a director, he’s a talent for sure Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/19/25 Full Review Ronald R. Great Movie!!! Highly Recommended!!! Not much original here, but Jeremy Renner turns in a great performance as Ben Affleck's trigger happy sidekick. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 08/21/25 Full Review Read all reviews
