Adam Graham Detroit News "The Void" gets louder, grosser and more stupid the further it progresses, becoming an endurance test in its final sequences. Rated: C Apr 21, 2017 Full Review Adam Nayman The Ringer The resulting splatter is a bloody mess, which, if not a mass-audience spectacle, is exactly what these filmmakers were going for in the first place. Apr 7, 2017 Full Review John DeFore The Hollywood Reporter One of the more action-packed features to come from the current crop of John Carpenter-inspired filmmakers, The Void finds collaborators Jeremy Gillespie and Steven Kostanski going much further than many of their peers. Apr 7, 2017 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review A refreshing change from supernatural specters and slasher remakes. Rated: 2.5/4 Apr 4, 2022 Full Review Emma Wolfe SpookyAstronauts They did have a good idea and a good premise... but it kind of lost momentum. Rated: 4/10 Apr 26, 2021 Full Review Brent McKnight The Last Thing I See "The Void" delivers dramatic beats; manic, WTF monster madness; and enough gore to paint an entire hospital red. Rhys T From start to end this film is eerie, the right amount of everything. It would be nice to see a sequel to further delve into the ‘the void’ to better understand the story behind it. Really enjoyed this. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/12/25 Full Review Joseph H The Void = Hellraiser 2! Pretty close to actual plagiarism! Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/09/25 Full Review Gabriel S Get ready for a little trash. Double trash! The Void is a horror film that pays tribute to the creature features of the 80s and 90s. Take it lightly. The story follows Sheriff Daniel Carter who stumbles upon a person in need of help. Carter takes the person to the nearest hospital, and there, sh-- hits the fan. Ignore that this movie is from 2016, and you can easily believe that you are watching some obscure movie from the period of Halloween, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, or Friday the 13th. In Direction and Cinematography, The Void gets it right. The plot is simple: a group of people trapped in a half-a-- hospital because of an apparent occult group that wants who-knows-what. Outside is dangerous, but soon the group discovers that inside is too. Avoid expecting any kind of depth in this story. The characters seem to be caricatured versions of crude stereotypes; and the plot points are predictable. But that's the fun: you know it's going to be a pleasant adventure for all the wrong reasons, a superficial horror flick that's enjoyable for its simplicity and exaggeration. Naturally, a critical look reveals a number of problems. Carter, as the protagonist, is weak and superficial, although the dialogues suggest traumas with his ex-wife and his late father, these inexplicable in the film's story. The cultists are too idle on the Grand Scheme of Things. The dynamics of the characters follow a tangent that is too surreal for what would happen in a more realistic situation. Watch The Void knowing these things, watch it on the assumption that you just want to end a good day with a trashy horror movie and a cold one with popcorn, and you'll have a pleasant experience. Expect too much and you will be disappointed. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 12/19/24 Full Review Omar G The Void (2017). 2.5/5. It's my second viewing and it didn't improve over the years. The plot of the film takes several plots from John Carpenter's films such as being Sieged by several crazy killers like Assault on Precinct 13 (1976), they are at night in a hospital with the staff being killed like in Halloween II (1981), two guys come to kill strange creatures from space that have tentacles that come out of people like in The Thing (1982), the protagonists are besieged and the end where the protagonist sacrifices himself by throwing himself with the demon leader, through a dimensional portal to close it is like in Prince of Darkness (1987). The policeman is an idiot like those in real life who shoot for fear of being killed and thus scare people to control them. The nurse was more skilled but was wasted in the script, turning her into a damsel in distress who must be saved by her inept man. The second half of the film becomes boring, there is a symbolic descent into hell, the villain seems to be a plagiarism of Frank Cotton "the Monster" from Hellraiser (1987) with the personality of Pinhead the Priest of Hell. They take from Hellbound Hellraiser II (1988), the young mute boy is like the mute girl who was Kristy Cotton's sidekick and the God Leviathan. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 11/30/24 Full Review Adam T IT left a void in me. I was hoping for more of a story. I was hoping for more jump scares, and more use of the classic 80s horror props. but hey at least it was coherent and had kind of a finish. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 10/14/24 Full Review Regina P Concept wasn't all that bad, but it was too much body horror for me. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 10/14/24 Full Review Read all reviews
