Critics Consensus

The Wanting Mare operates at a chilly remove, but writer-director Nicholas Ashe Bateman's visually striking drama is worth watching for its sheer ambition.

Isaac Feldberg RogerEbert.com Exquisitely elusive, a love dream that slips through your fingers as you reach for it, made with ingenuity and stunning clarity of vision. Rated: 10/10 Sep 6, 2022 Full Review Phuong Le Guardian It fails to grasp that, even in a world empty of hope, the interior life of its characters is still more interesting than visually impressive rubble and ruins. Rated: 2/5 Jan 31, 2022 Full Review Richard Whittaker Austin Chronicle Bateman's worldbuilding introduces stranger elements that are always counterbalanced by more grounded emotional developments, keeping the audience engaged as hard as the esoteric mythology pushes them away. Rated: 3/5 Feb 18, 2021 Full Review Jeff Ames ComingSoon.net I heartedly recommend The Wanting Mare to film enthusiasts looking for a decidedly unique film experience. Rated: 7/10 Apr 18, 2022 Full Review Christopher Cross Tilt Magazine With a DIY-attitude in tow with its small cast and crew, Bateman paints an intimate portrait of life tethered to a single location and the constant desire to walk away from it all Rated: 4/5 Apr 7, 2022 Full Review Lindsey Romain Nerdist A dreamy, dazzling fantasy debut. AnnaB L Not a horse or a real plotline in sight. Some lovely post work though. But acting not god enough to pull off the 'wanting' of a real script. I am very forgiving with films, and appreciate great arthouse pieces-- but this--- it just dragged. And I literally came for the horses! Rated 2 out of 5 stars 08/19/24 Full Review Jonathan K I liked the film even though I'm not totally sure I understood it. It's like a tone poem, not unlike Terrence Malick's work. The visuals are beautiful and the backdrops are mostly CGI, but in the best kind of way, really giving a sense of a place as mysterious as it's meant to be. The DP has a good sense of style with it all too, and I especially love the dead center wide shots. The story is rather impenetrable, obtuse and opaque. Ultimately, that's to the film's detriment. But the mood and the sense of an underlying, albeit under-served, philosophy and tale, make it worth the viewing if you're in the mood for an ethereal slow mystical burn. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 07/14/24 Full Review Chris O A confusing badly sewn together series of bizarre but beautiful post apocalyptic scenes and encounters with little dialogue to make sense of the narrative. The supposed poignant storyline felt archaically patriarchal and I wish I didn't have to watch endings for closure with this one! Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/24/23 Full Review blanche r The simple storytelling and slowly unfolding narrative are part of what make this film so stunning. Lovely and moving and the slightly surreal, gorgeous, dark setting left me needing more of this world. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member "Boring" and "slow" seem to be adjectives used by reviews who maybe have no imagination, who couldn't with with themselves and the movie and get lost in the mystery of it all. I liked being able to fill in the spaces with what I believed was happening in this mythical world. I liked the time to reflect on the poetic images. In this age of reality tv obsessed brains, I think this movie dares us to change our pace and what we expect out of a viewing experience. I look forward to more worlds from this director. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/27/23 Full Review Audience Member I did not like The Wanting Mare. It is terribly slow and is too artsy for it's own good. If you like not knowing what's going on for an hour and a half, definitely watch this movie! Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/26/23 Full Review Read all reviews
