Cath Clarke Guardian There are a couple of performances that feel more wooden than the panelling in the chief whip’s office. But the film, directed and co-written by Christopher Presswell, is likable enough. Rated: 3/5 Sep 3, 2024 Full Review Romey Norton Film Focus Online With a thought-provoking and emotional story, The Whip is a politically charged drama. If you’re a fan of day-time-drama then this will be right up your street. Rated: 3/5 Oct 14, 2024 Full Review Tom Shone Sunday Times (UK) The gang that Sadie assembles, lured not by cash but by the idealistic urge to topple a government and remake society, seem too pie-in-the-sky for the slicker dynamics of the heist movie to really work. Rated: 2/5 Sep 11, 2024 Full Review Rich Cline Shadows on the Wall Neither a satire nor a Ken Loach-style takedown, it's an engaging low-budget heist comedy pitting average people against the halls of power. Rated: 3.5/5 Sep 10, 2024 Full Review Andrea Chase Killer Movie Reviews If Presswell falters with scenes of sentiment, he is precise in evoking the crushing sense of helpless rage that bureaucracy engenders. His dissection of absurdities great and small is flawless, his dialogue stinging as it slices with surgical precision. Rated: 4/5 Sep 2, 2024 Full Review Read all reviews

Dan H "The Whip" is a refreshing take on the heist genre, mixing social drama with dry humor as it follows Sadie, a desperate carer, and a disillusioned MP, Michael, on a mission to steal incriminating secrets from a ruthless government whip. Directed by Christopher Presswell, the film critiques austerity and the struggles of those caught in the bureaucratic system. Despite its low budget, "The Whip" shines with wit and authenticity, balancing its political message with relatable, well-written characters. Though lacking Hollywood gloss, it's a unique, heartfelt story of ordinary people standing up to power. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 11/06/24 Full Review Jerome V A new bill awaiting vote will affect caregiver resources for citizens with disabilities. Sadie Baxter is a stressed young woman caring for her ailing sister. Thus begins "The Whip", a smart independent feature that moves briskly and capably. Sadie (played by the talented Shian Denovan), enlists the help of three friends to break into Parliament to steal a blackmail book. Gala Wesson, Daniel Davids, and Tom Knight round out this fine cast. Ray Bullock, Jr. plays a memorable villain. Director Christopher Presswell, along with his co-writer and actors, treats us to a very entertaining and suspenseful tale. Character differences are highlighted via clever pairings and payoffs. Everyone here has something at stake. If you enjoy British capers, you'll love this! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/06/24 Full Review Ian W An overall watchable movie with its strong and weak points. First, it is an enjoyable story that can make you think and flows easily. It unfolds nicely and in a slow fashion with explanations to help guide it along. On the weak points, it becomes obvious at a very early stage that this movie was made on an extremely small tight budget, but as long as you can see past that, then you should enjoy the movie. If you appreciate small indy films, then it's worth a watch. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/25/24 Full Review Ruby C The Whip is an independent feature that follows Sadie Baxter, played by Shin Denovan, who takes matters into her own hands when the threat of the passing a new bill will affect her sister on disability. She enlists the help of others and their minds go to work to devise a plan to steal a "blackmail" book. The film is well acted, well written and well thought out. It is a fun journey with intense moments of will they/won't they. In the end, The Whip is an engaging story with likable characters and a fun movie watching experience. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/01/24 Full Review Kolo P Michael Harrington MP is discouraged with the state of politics and spin and is a pretty convincing character with a nice turn around from selling the party line to airing his true feelings. Sadie the lead character is perfect for the worn out sister health carer role with some pretty solid acting. Multiple aerial shots break up the scenes and don't really get repetitive, adding some good transitions. The Whip himself is a classic bad guy but not too much of an archetype but we recognize him to be the villain pretty quickly without any unnecessary exposition. Into the actual heist the action moves along pretty quickly and while locations and sets are occasionally sparse (ok it's actually not possible to film inside Parliament!) it's hard to worry about it for long since the heist moves along at a swift pace along with a few good twists and turns. Overall The Whip is an enjoyable film with a solid cast performance and a story that is just as believable (suspension of disbelief) as Danny Ocean and his crew. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/26/24 Full Review Nicky P I was gripped from the start - empathising with the characters being let down by the system and hoping they were able to find a way around it. The way that British politics is explored was refreshing and, quite honestly, educational at points. This was a British heist movie with grit, unexpected pops of humour and exploring the real struggle that most of society face in some way or another against those who hold and abuse power.
